Happy Independence Day From Finland

Postby Classic Finn » Fri Dec 05, 2008 5:37 pm

Tomorrow, December 6th,(Which is now) is Independence Day. Finland will be 91 years old this year.

We all remember how our forefathers fought fiercely against the Russians and the Germans to become free and to become a free independent nation. And utmost without the aid or assistance fom any other Country.

Thank You to our Veterans who gave their lives in order for us to live free in our small nation. Thank You Grandpa. Your Spirit, Will Power and Bravery will long be remembered.

As usual, there will be processions, a military parade (in Turku this year), and the annual ritual of attending the Independence Day Reception at the Presidential Palace, either in person or via the medium of the television in the corner of the living-room.

December 6th falls on a Saturday this time, so it isn't exactly going to be a day off work, but equally it will not be a normal shopping Saturday, as stores, Alko liquor outlets, and all the normal paraphernalia of weekend life will be closed.
In other words, please do your essential shopping beforehand (today), and remember that buses, trams, the Helsinki Metro, long-distance coaches, and trains will be following Sunday timetables on Independence Day.

As always, please be careful with the candles traditionally put up in windows to mark those who gave their lives for an independent Finland:

Heikki, do they fire off a lot of fireworks to add to the celebration? Hmmm, 91 years, just think in 9 more years you'll be ringing in the 100th aniversary. Happy Independence day, and keep that candle burning.
