Hickory Flooring

Postby Lynn Coleman » Sun Dec 07, 2008 2:00 am

Hi all,

I'm looking for some information about hickory as a flooring. Is it durable? Anyone have any experience with this wood on their floors?

Any information will be helpful, thanks in advance.

It's nice enough looking I thought it might be good to floor the inkwell with as well as my new living room floor.

Very hard, very heavy. If weight is a concern, only consider a hickory veneered engineered wood flooring. Hickory is very durable but also is very difficult to sand so if you get a deep scratch it can take a LOT of elbow grease to repair. However, it has a beautiful, distinctive grain that takes stain well. Without stain there is a huge variation between sapwood (white) and (dark brown) heartwood--looks very rustic but is not everyone's cup of tea.

Best,
Tom

We put hickory flooring in the kitchen and dining room of our cabin. After 4 years it still looks great. It was fininshed "in place" as opposed to pre-fininshed. The only precaution we took was to put felt pads on the bottom of the chairs. So far I really like it.

Thanks for the info. We like the price, it's pre-finished so I like the color but if I were doing it I'd probably go a tad bit lighter.
