2 hinges or 3?

Postby planovet » Mon Dec 08, 2008 1:04 pm

I'm getting close to finishing my doors and was wondering what others thought about the hinges. I'm leaning toward using 3 on each side but I have not made up my mind yet. What do you think?

I used 2 hinges on each one. My doors trimmed out at 24# each.

...personally, I like the look of 3 hinges but 2 will work out just fine...especially with those 8 screw bullet hinges....... 8)

Two will hold but three will hold better. Les chance of sagging and misalignment latter. Three will also help prevent bowing in the door. When you compress weatherstrip behind it there is a lot of outward pressure which can cause a bow/leak.

I'm with Madjack!

I did 2, but I think 3 would look better.

I'm not worried about 2 hinges holding, 2 will more than hold the weight of the door. I was more worried about looks. Even though my doors are very solid and I doubt they will bow any, I like Gerdo's comments about the weatherstriping. 3 would help on the hinge side but the opposite side only has 1 point of attachment, the door latch. Something to think about though...

3 hinges look better & may help keep door square & f

Postby Esteban » Mon Dec 08, 2008 3:15 pm

I prefer the look of three hinges. With no experience to back it up I agree that 3 hinges may help keep your doors square and flat. BTW, great looking wall, door and paint job.

Just before seeing this thread I ordered stainless steel piano hinges for similar looking doors...mostly so the hinges and screws would be concealed...and maybe more secure (theft deterrent).

My doors which are not yet completed each have a 1/16 to 1/8 inch bow to the outside (it's high in the middle where a door knob will go). Hopefully the door latch and pressure from the door seals will help to flatten the doors once they're installed.

3

the middle hinge will keep that side of the door straight.

the latch should take care of the other side.

Somebody's sprayed a car or two in the past, looks like. Slick paint job! The only thing better than red is more red!!! And just in time for Christmas!!!
So many factors contribute to "3"...strength, looks, the door bow reduction. If you aren't doing piano hinges, for the love of all that's straight and true, use three hinges Mark.

Thanks! But I have never painted anything like this before. And it's rolled, not sprayed.

if you are using it as a lift off door, 2 is easier to align than 3 when putting back on. I may be odd in that I think 2 looks better, but I'd position top and bottom more like you have with 3, just skip the middle one. With the latch in the middle opposite, should give a nice closure

With the red - simple may be better - I would go with thtwo hinges and keept the sides a little less cluttered
