Tow Vehicle Died--What to do?

Postby Dean_A » Mon Dec 08, 2008 1:54 pm

Well the rods went out on my truck over the weekend and the dealer is quoting my $6500. to fix it.

It had 220K on it and was 10 years old, so I got my money out of it already, and I'm not interested in trying to fix it.

I'm going to get a new truck, but my question is, what do I do with a '98 4Runner with 220K miles and a bad engine? Are there people who would buy such a thing, or should I just call a wrecker? I've never had a unload a "broken" car before, so I'm not sure of the best approach. Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks!

Up here, we can give the car to charity, get a tax receipt and they collect the money for junking it.

Maybe a recycling place would take it. If it's got some useable parts. You could probably also donate it and get a tax deduction on it.

...I would put an ad in the local paper advertising a "parts" vehicle...depending upon the shape the rest of the vehicle is in, I would ask somewhere in the 500-1000 dollar range.......

Good point by madjack. I always see Toyota trucks being down down south from the San Bernardino area. I'm sure they would love the parts for cheap.

Good idea on the parts thing. Maybe I'll put it on Craigslist. The rest of the car is in fantastic shape. I'd be stoked if I could get a grand for it.

Thanks for the ideas.

Dean, I have done this several times...I tend to buy older vehicles and run'em untill the wheels fall off and then sell off the rest...if the rest is in "fantastic shape" I wouldn't take less than a grand...keep in mind that body parts...fenders/lights/bumpers/grill/doors/cab/bed MAY fetch premium prices from body shops.............

I'm part of a Toyota offroad club. I'll post up on their forum and see if I can help sell it for you.

These guys may build a Truggy out of it!

Know a mechanic you trust?

I bet you can get a whole used engine for $1500-2000, maybe another 2K for labor.

Once replaced it should be worth 5K or so.

Search "used toyota engine"

Maybe you can sell it to a mechanic who will do the swap and sell it for a profit.

You might get a lot of satisfaction and closure with a Viking funeral. :D
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

it would be a fitting tribute. Me and that truck have seen a lot of good times and good terrain together. I'm going to miss the ol' girl...

 That I'd like to see that out in San Diego bay  . Maybe do it during "Americas Finest City " week.
My son has parted out several cars over the years and when there isn't any good parts left he has a recycler haul off the shell, he usually get paid for that too. He makes a pile of money selling the parts. Just advertise with photos on Craigslist and they will beat a path to your door with tools in hand. :) Danny

Hmmm, not sure the wife (or the home owners association) would appreciate a junked car sitting out in the street. it's hard to part-out a car when you're living in the 'burbs. I think I need to do this all-or-nothing.

Call around to your local junk yards/car salvage yards.
They will give you a (rough) quote over the phone as to what they will pay for your truck.

If it is a common model, it may be just scrap metal value.
If it is a model that they can sell the parts from for a good profit, they may quote you several hundred dollars.

Now you know if it has much interest to the general public...

A transmission for a 10 year old car from a salvage yard can sell for $800.00 plus...

Never know what you might have...
