I voted for three hinges...because the choice was between using 2 or 3 of them. When the hinges are visible I prefer 3.

Personally I'll be using stainless steel piano hinges for my doors. One concealed 36" long hinge per door. www.stainless-hinges.com is a supplier suggested by Steve Frederick.

You know this question never even entered my mind haha. Good one! Piano hinges are popular, but since I may have doors before I have windows due to cost factors, I really like the ability to easily remove the doors for future installs and maintenance. So I'm doin the sparksalot McMaster Hinges as well. Cost is a factor there to since a set of four are $50 to my house, I am doing 2 to each side. They sure are nice tho :D

What's up with the weather here?? Sunday was 75 and Monday is 27??? I took the day off today too dangit! ! !

Dang :? the more I look at it (thank you for the visual) the two hinge looks like a prison cell and the three hinge looks more like a house hold door. argh.. I think the majority I have seen were piano hinges.

I gotta vote 2 for cost, and 3 for looks...

OK, now you guys have me wondering if I should use a concealed piano hinge. When I was in the planning stages, the lift-off hinges were what I was shooting for. Now I'm wondering if they would be too bulky on the sides. I have the recessed door handles and if I wanted to keep the sides looking sleek the piano hinge could be the answer.

Now I'm all confused :?

No piano hinge! With all that red - how are you going to find your door without some more visual clues???

I like two hinges, but placed a little further apart than in your first pic. I think the little bit of chrome really sets off the slick red paint.

Why is that my preference? Here you go:

I was going to use the piano hinge at first too, but I like the style of the chrome hinges better I think.

The chrome "topedo" lift-off hinges cost me a little over $15 each from Austin Hardware. That was before they seemed to have lost interest in individual customer/builders. Now it seems they're asking around $47 each. Go figure. I'm not sure where else you can get them now.

HINGES

Postby Senior Ninja » Fri Jan 02, 2009 12:46 pm

Hi Everyone,
Hinges on my td? I used two, one each side as in piano hinges. I was looking for a special look and used brass hinges. And another thing. I framed the sides of the door opening and the door sides with oak. I wanted something that would hold the screws in tight.
