That sucks...it always gives me that insecure "I've been invaded" feeling. :(

The other one that pisses me off is vandelism....my handbuilt yellow cedar canoe got spray painted with Bleep...Bleep...Bleep over Halloween. I'd love to put some ketchup on one of the paddles and shove it down the painters throat!!!

Dang, that really bites. Did you have them marked any way? Could you check the pawn shops? I have a small engraver that I mark all me expensive stuff with. There are several different ways to make up an I.D. number, just right it down or remember it in case the opportunity arises that you could identify something.

If caught, I would suggest chili powder instead of ketchup and a different orifice further south.

My dad tells a story about my grandfather who had a cabin in the upper peninsula of Michigan.

He said when he was a little boy him and grampa went up to the cabin in the winter to do some deer hunting. When the got there one of the neighbors came out of his cabin screaming and shouting at grampa. And the argument took place over a few min then it was over . My dad said he never knew what all this was going on over.

Then a few years back grampa came clean. And told this story. Seems he would go up there twice a year once in the spring to check on the place and to cut wood for in the winter. And year after year in the winter when he got there some one had cleaned out the wood pile leaving basically nothing. Then one spring gramp decided to drill out a log and fill it with black powder and inset a wooden peg and put it back on the wood pile.

Need less to say that winter he found out who was stealing the wood because it blew the door off the wood stove and sent a chimney flying thrugh the air.. And the wood stopped disappearing after that.

I have had good luck in the past, by tieing my St. Bernard, Sam, to any tools required to be left out overnight. I never lost a tool while he was on the job. ;)

Stolen tools

Postby crankshaft » Thu Dec 18, 2008 3:31 pm

Sorry about your tools. Welcome to the club..

The problem is that you may get victimized again by the insurance company if you report the theft.. That happened to me several years ago. Not only did the insurance claims adjuster make me fell like I had filed a false claim by interrogating me. But my insurance rates went up because of the claim I filed.

Hi, Joanne:

:( Sorry to hear about your loss! Not nice! I had a whole tool chest and its contents stolen once; but, as it turned out, almost everything was covered by our home insurance. Have you checked your Home Ins. policy?

It took me a minute but what a way to put it!

Hey Jo-Jo, I'm really sorry you got robbed. I was just telling a friend that a thief is nothing but a low-life scum bag. I too left my garage open Saturday night with the light on from about 2:00 a.m. till 7:30 a.m. I was out there fooling around with Christmas boxes and completely forgot to close it. The thieves must not have been on my street that night. That was the first time in 13 years I have done that and I hope I never do it again. I don't decorate outside anymore because of Christmas thieves taking my Christmas net lights off my bushes a couple of years ago...ripped them out with live wires hanging. I was so heartsick that I took everything down and haven't put anything up outside again. Lousy S.O.B.'s.

I agree with Johnny about engraving all your tools. I know they can file it out but you never know. Take pictures too.

Lisa, they have these fake video camera's that uses batteries to light up a little red light on them to make it look like it is recording. Maybe you could invest in a couple (around $30 each) and mount them AND leave a sign that the premises has video security. They look just like security cameras. I've been fooled by them when I was breaking into my neighbor's house. Ha!...just kidding. I have a key and was borrowing a couple of his chairs. He said even his kids were fooled until he told them.

sorry for your lost.

I had all my hand tools stolen a few decades ago. I like to think that the chumps that stole 'em busted their knuckles everytime they used them.

Its teh only way I could get around to not being pissT

Been there--done that! Never found any forgiveness in my heart for the thieves. (Other than the drill they stole that didn't work!)
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

Sorry to hear of your loss, it makes you feel so violated.
Many years ago I worked in a shop in Memphis TN, turning wrenches for a living. The thieves hit one Sat night and cleaned out the entire shop. I personally lost over $10K in tools. Neither I nor the shop had insurance, so I signed a note on the tool truck for over $5K on Monday morning.
Now comes the good part, about 6 weeks later a fellow pulls up trying to sell some tools from the trunk of a car. While looking through them I come across a few with my name engraved on them. If the other mechanic hadn't been there to stop me, I'm sure the fellow would have left in a hearse, at least he did leave with several knots on his head from a 1/2" drive Snap-On breaker bar. :hammerhead: He also left without the tools he was trying to sell ;) I really don't think he was going to call the cops

Hey Joanne,
Sorry to hear about that. That is very frustrating.
I would check ebay, but keep craigslist and other classified sites in mind.
I hope that Santa brings you new tools, and names and addresses of the thieves.

If you put your name on it, put in the most conspicuous part of the tool you can. And, you might want to use a false last name just in case the tool gets into some other wrong hands..... just seeing a name is a slight deterrent.

I put my name in my hat, as I keep leaving it places... it's a good Irish woolen hat I'd rather not lose....

Kind of full circle.... my mother used to put my name on clothes.. now I'm doing it... and now I'm scared.
