Water in battery box?

Postby Jonolin » Mon Dec 29, 2008 6:14 pm

The battery to my Pleasant Valley teardrop is mounted on the tongue in a black, plastic box. I noticed today when I was getting ready to connect a battery charger to the battery, that there was water in the box. I figure this is rain water since I have to store the tear outside and the cover I've been using got blown off during a recent storm. I removed the battery from the plastic box and have it charging sitting on a bench right now.

But, is it safe to have water around the battery like that? I may drill some holes in the bottom of the plastic box to let any future water out.

Most cars have the battery mounted up high but under certain conditions it will get wet. The battery is encased in a sealed plastic box so what's to worry about as long as it doesn't sit in a pool of water. My batteries are in exposed battery trays close to the road and I haven't had any problems with water. Just my two cents worth. :D Danny

Yeah, should have mentioned it was sitting in about a half inch of water, which has me concerned about the set up.

Not a big deal... boat batteries often have a little water in the battery compartment. I like your idea to just drill some drain holes  Not as likely to sink your trailer as it would a boat  Drain holes will also provide more ventilation which means a dryer battery box and less chance of corrosion due to humid conditions.

Be sure it is water first. You can pour it on concrete and it will foam if it is acid. ;) If you don't have a covered battery box you might want to get one. They are not real expensive.

Water in the battery box is not really a problem - Unless you meant it to be there  get out the drill and drill some drainage holes
