Homebrew Trailer Frame?

Postby skippidydooda » Tue Jan 06, 2009 5:34 pm

Ive been snooping around and I haven't been able to find anyone who made their own bolt together trailer frame. Is is possible? Safe? Are there plans anywhere online? Has anyone here ever made one? I'm cheap...but i don't want to do anything stupid...

I cant see any issue with making your own bolt together frame, although if you're not sure on the strength bolt it together and then get it welded as well once it's rolling.

I've seen a couple bolt together frames on the web, although I don't know where they are right now.

I seem to recall they were built out of 3/16" angle.

I also modeled up something similar, let me see if I can find it.

Mike...

edit: okay, I found this... (yes, it's upside down!!!)

You ought to ask Andrew what he thinks.

Matt

Take a look at this thread from Jerome, he built a nice bolt together frame. I saw it at the LCG, and he drove from CA!

Mike,
Here are some links to Jeromes modernistic build. His frame was a homemade bolt together made of 2x2 angle

That is very similar, almost identical, to the frames I built but I have to say that it is not my frame and that is not my garage workspace. I have taken most of my frame pics out of my album but could repost them if there is interest.

bolt together is fine.... the box of the t/d is stronger than the frame....

I don't have the link, but I still like the v-tongue attached to the spring/axle mount.... the rest is unnecessary weight....... scrap it.

Looks good, though I think it could be improved:

- It would be better to run the tongue to the third cross-member, not the second as that would reduce the load on that cross-member (which might well be the place where the trailer would fail first).

- Bolting together two angles to make the cross-member where the tongue ends increases the strength of that cross-member nicely, but it might benefit from a few more bolts between the two - 4 are shown but 8 or 10 evenly spaced would be better.

- The connection to the tongue, at the front end of the diagonals is a bit weird, with the bolt going through at an angle. However it is correct to use a horizontal bolt here, and certainly not a vertical one (which would weaken the tongue a lot). It would be better to trim off the horizontal leg of the diagonals, bend the projecting bit of vertical leg fore-and-aft and then bolt that through the tongue.

There are a few pics in my personal gallery on page 4. I will try to add some more in a day or two.
