We just cut our door out(carefully) when we were cutting the sides .... a little sanding and it fit fine... No troubles ...What's all the fuss???

Maybe I have a phobia

alright we have a cut door, is yours just a pannel or is it thicker, is it hallow, or solid? hinges on outside or piano hinge between body and thicker door?
did you put on a slide latch, regular door knob, garage door lock?

how is it lock to the frame?

I have doors on my trailer the day I put the first one on screwed the hingers to the middle frame the wind blew it off. I have a second pc of wood there now with longer screws. you can see it from the outside. I hold my door closed inside with string like docking a boat. I keep it closed with a pad lock like on a storage shed. air comes in from outside. I do a good job of imating a door but a door like to my house it an't.

I understand there is a thing called a T strip that I can put on the outside of the door to keep the wind out and I Think I know where to get that.

If I make it into a hollow door will it behave better? Your talking to a guy who really never cuts a straight line. this trailer is the biggist thing I ever built using simple tools and some power tools I slowly got along the way and that is one of the reasons it has taken me 4 years to build it. I just kept reading and watching all who were around me. I got advice from folks off the net, who know someone show built something like my trailer, it was not until the camp out in oct. that I knew I had any people in my area that built them. Tom in morro Bay built his but his doors were pre made by a teardrop company.

I can camp in it now but the doors are barly on there.

You guys are right it is time for pictures. Time to get er done right.
I have a new tool a new digital camera and it is time to see if this knew tool can get me some new doors done right.

when I built the walls I attached wood to add insolation between the walls to keep the weight down I used soft light pine as seen above.

When the wind ripped my door off in an attempt to put the doors on so I could camp with other trailers at a meet that night. The Pine did not hold the door. I added a second pc of the same wood strip where the hinge went and put in deeper screws.

Sould I either take that wood out and replace it with hard wood or put in a metel plate to reinforce it.

The finished door as you cans see from this shot

is not from the original batch of wood and I will later get closer to show you the flaws.
the first of which this door that you see is made of 2 pcs and I cut the window out at that point and put in the outside gun turit type window to hold it to gether.

The finished product looks good from a far. but it makes a door on an old shack look good, once you get closer. It is almost a gate rather then a door.

My doors were pretty simple.
I took the blank that I cut out of the side (3/4" plywood),
then glued that to a piece of 1/4" plywood that I cut 1" larger than the original. That over-lapping section of 1/4" is what seals the door. Oh, and the front of the door does not have the over-hanging 1/4"...that's where the hinge goes.
I used wood glue and lots of nail-gun staples to make sure the two pieces do not come loose.
Then cut the window and added a block so I could save some $$$ and use a standard house door handle assembly.

This is not just for me but others who fallow behind who got lost in the mix like I did.

I took wood shop in jr hight and made a nice pair of aluminum fireplace tools and a wood bowl on a lathe wich taught me about the wonders of glue.

Now I am in wood shop T&TTT where it all comes together.

Same doors but I reinfoced the locks and took it off to NM in Aug of 08 a 3000 mile trip about.
Now that I understand doors better having seen many many doors and seeing Steve B.'s as he constructs his.
I have the wood for the new outside and in.
I did not think about that when I built the frame in the walls which are made of soft pine. I had to add hard wood to that to make the doors stay on.
Now I must figure that out all over again.
I might attach the hinges to the ouside oak wood or put in some strips of iron over the soft pine and bolt it on.
as you can see to the left... I have windows for them. I also now have door handles ready to install on the new doors.

I planned ahead and used oak at both sides of the hinges and a block of oak where the latch was installed. For what it's worth, I wanted a retro look and have used a replica skeleton key deadbolt and knob combination. The outside knob is brass and the inside is clear plastic made to look like glass. As long as I lock the deadbolt before taking off, I have never had the doors come open.
