For those of you who met me and my dog Diesel at Minden, I wanted to let you know I rescued a Cattle dog puppy last week from a shelter where she was 24 hours from death. ACK! I'm a sucker for a cute face...

Looks like my parent's old dog. It was a purebred Australian Cattledog.............had a bad habit of nipping at everyones feet.

yes, so is she. Diesel is Cattle dog possibly mixed with something else. Both rescued from shelters. Little Bandit is nippy and chewy in general because she is teething, Diesel is not nippy unless he doesn't like someone, so he rarely nips..if he does, he gets crated so that behavior stops pretty quick. they are good watch dogs though, both of them bark their heads off when someone knocks at the door. it's a good thing here in the ghetto.

Jolene, your good deed for the day.

At some point, I may try to contact one of the 'rescue' groups. Did they do a home visit and so on? I looked into border collie rescue and they require a fenced in yard. Was a bit put off by that requirement.......

Your new pup looks really cute...

Jolene:
Way to go. It sounds like you know what you are in for. I have friends who show Auzzies and I can popint you toward them for advice if you need it.

Arnereil: As far as "breed rescue" don't be put off by one group. I work with Cairn Terrier Rescue in So. Calif and requirements can vary a lot. We all think we have very reasonable requirements but the good ones make exceptions for good homes. The main thing is to find a good home for dog that needs it, not sticking by too many rules. Check for another rescue group and look out of state. akc.org has a list of all the breed rescue groups. you might look there.

No, they did not do a home visit. What happened was that I fouind this pup on the shelter website, but they were onyl adopting out to a rescue because of her special needs (leg tremors indicating neurological issues). i convinced a rescue group to meet me at the shelter, pull the puppy, give her to me as a foster and let me take over from there. She hasn't been spayed yet either until we can determine that she can be spayed safely. She has a neurologist appointment Friday.

When it comes to rescues, keep looking around and don't get too discouraged. Some rescues are too stuck int heir rules and wont' adpt to peopel with children, people who dont' own their home, people without a fence, etc etc etc. Just keep looking around and you will find a rescue who will actually take the tiem to see that you are a good dog parent and adopt you a dog. Shelters only have you fill out an application, they don't do home visits.

good luck...and I hoep you knwo what you are gettign into with Border Collies..they are even more intense than ACDs!

Jolene, she really is beautiful!! I am so glad that there are rescue groups out there, it breaks my heart to think of any animal being put down when good homes can be found. I get teary-eyed just thinking about it. My Rottie is a rescue case, we got her when she was about 6 months, and the guy who had her before us was abusive toward her. She was just this cute little puppy, and she was terrified to have anyone touch her! She is sweet as she can be, and I am so glad that she came into our lives. Let us all know how the visit to the neurologist goes,

Way to go Jolene. :applause:
It is really nice to hear of others who believe in animal rescue. Your pup looks grand I hope everything works out at the nuerologist. I have a senior sheltie cross that came from an infirm elderly lady, and a sheltie who lost a home through divorce, an orange tabby that suffered at the hands of some young children and is blind in one eye. This house came with 2 senior goldens and a cat. I have also had a black shepherd. He had a very rough first year and came with some major health issues. Sadly we had to face reality when he was only three. All these animals are/were greatly loved and are/were important members of our family.
For everyone thinking about making room in their hearts for an animal, rescues can be a challenge but are also sources of immense joy. And don't forget those old dogs/cats out there. Your time with the old guys may be short but think of the love and comfort you can give them in their twilight years.
