I picked up a Coleman 425B

today at the local Habitat for Humanity ReStore for $8.




Honestly, I haven't used one of these since I was a teenager, and that was a few years ago! The knob won't turn the fuel valve, and the pump doesn't appear to work.

The pump plunger goes through a cap with a handle on it. Does that just pull apart? I want to look for a gasket, washer, O-ring, or something.

Awesome, thanks! The first thing I learned is that "handle" on the plunger isn't a handle at all. Boy I'm glad I didn't grab that with a pair of pliers and give it a good tug!

Cliff, That's a great find! Great price too! Did the valve break off?? Looks like a case of dried fuel acting like cement.. Proceed with caution as the brass parts will break easily. A couple of cans of spray choke and carburetor cleaner will help free things up a bit.

I have the grate. It's sitting off to the left of the stove.

Mark, the valve turns easily with a light grip with pliers. Just the knurling or whatever inside the knob is gone. I'm planning to take it apart tomorrow (with choke cleaner) and clean it out inside.

This thing came with fuel in it! I put it in an unapproved container (a 1 qt paint mixing plastic pail) until I figure out what to do with it. I'll probably burn it.

Is the screw still in the end of the knob? I found out the hard way that the spline portion of the valve stem is not very strong!

I don't think you need a replacement valve stem. It just needs to be cleaned. As for the knob, if can wait a few days, I got 4 of them coming. I just have to pick them up. I can send you one free. P.M. me.....

Hey Cliff, great deal on that stove. Boy I wish I could get a deal like that. I just picked up a Coleman 425B stove off EBay and I paid over $39.00 (with shipping) for it. I'm still waiting for it to arrive so I can tear it down and clean it up.

My brother, who happens to have and use a Coleman 425B, stopped by this weekend (he lives in Federal Way, WA). With his experience and some 3 n 1 oil, we got the 425B fired up! It's gonna need a new generator valve, though, as whoever had it before me used pliers to tun the valve once too often.

I also picked up a 425E, and it looks like it needs either a new generator, valve, or both. Hardly any gas gets out at all!
