Extending the length over the ends of the trailer....

Postby KDOG » Wed Feb 18, 2009 9:20 pm

I am looking at if its possible to safely extend the length of the box portion of the camper 6 inches over each end of the trailer frame to get an extra foot of length without causing any problems. I realize I would have to beef up the floor framing by adding spars that go over the end parts of the trailer frame. Has anyone done this?

You shouldn't have any problems at all. I think that is pretty common.

My teardrop extends 6" over the rear and I don't need any extra framing to hold up that little. The front hangs over some of the "Y" on the tongue too. The roll pans makes everything really solid. :D Danny

I extended 6" front and rear as well as 4" on each side without any framing. I did use 3/4" ply and ran a 2x2 nailer along the outside edge all the way around. This gives me a place to attach the wall and stiffens up the ply a bit too. There is absolutely no deflection in the ply at the edges.

When you think about it, cheap 3/4" underlayment often spans trusses or joists at 24" with little deflection. A few inches outside of your frame especially if using good quality 7ply+ plywood is really no big deal.

Just my two cents,
