BBQ Masters!!!!

Dear Masters of the BBQ,

I am trying to figure out how to cut down the overly big BBQ's that are sold today into on the fits for a teardrop. Does anyone have experience trimming those outrageously large cases they put BBQ's in. Geez, some of them remind me of the huge boxes they used to put speakers in. Boxes sized for mini-minded buyers out to demonstrate other sizes, which had nothing to do with sound quality.

That depends on how small you want to go...

You could buy a Grill/Stove...

or you could buy a small gas grill, like in this photo



or you could use a charcoal starter and just put a tiny grill on top of it...

Guy, are you talking about the big, iron smokers or the gas grills? Either way, it's going to be hard to "cut down" a store bought model. Buy a small charcoal smoker or an 18" Weber grill and stick it in the back of the car/truck. I love to smoke food on the grill and have gotten a good handle on the technique (ask Doug Hodder about my pork tederloin).

I don't have a galley on my tiny trailer at all but if I did, I'd still have my Weber to cook on. There's just something about charcoal and wood that gas can't even touch.

Do you have a picture of what you're wanting to cut down? Are you wanting to BBQ or grill with it, or both? BBQ = indirect heat, slowwww. Grill = direct heat, faster.

Guy...Jeff aka Warpony, makes a mean pork tenderloin....I went out and bought me a little weber too....When I was a geologist back in the 70's we used to take an old piece of drill casing and weld up a BBQ that used to fit in to the stake pockets on the pickup...It was all the rage...BBQ everyday at the rig...unfortunately mine got stolen about 1998....Dean H is a good BBQ guy too!!!! Here is a Brinkman sold at WalMart on sale for $160.

Got great parts but the boxes and enclosures are way to much.



Since this is stainless it will be difficult I know, However I was wondering what is the distance from grill to burner that is optimum for this.

Guy...I'd say that if you have a full sized pickup to haul it around in with all the other camping gear, great!!!! If not...I'd look for something smaller...even if you want to modify it, you're better off to either fab something up rather than cutting that one up and reworking it....You gotta decide gas or charcoal, and just how much are you going to use it...If you have capabilities to work in iron...might be fun to make up your own shaped like a tear....Just a thought....Doug
