I had about given up hope on this one. It's a 10$ stove. 6 weeks with 4 of them having no return communication, finally notice that it would indeed ship. Well, I got it today. 1940 417B. Might look like a sows ear...but I'll turn it into a silk purse. This one needs some dolly work on the lid, and will undergo a combination of bead blasting and stripping. I'm trying to get at least 1 example of a stove and a lantern from each decade. Now I have a project to work on during Daytona while in the garage! I'm thinking a hammered finish on the tank...just for grins. Cool cast Coleman copy in the fuel manifold that will detail up nicely with some contrasting heat paint....Doug

John....dolly work means that you use a piece of cast steel/iron to back up the dent/kink and then work out the kink with a body hammer from the other side. The side lips are kind of bent up on the lid. By using a dolly it allows you to do the work without going beyond what it needs and creating more problems for yourself. I have a hard time on things that are supposed to be perfectly flat in doing this type of thing...it's a real art, I'd love to learn how to do it really well. I'll take a pic. Doug

Your new/old stove looks fairly similar to the one I just picked up Last week... It's a Made in Canada m-4. Don't know what year...anybody got any ideas??

Also decided to try my hand at painting a stove tank. This poor guy is an orphan, so it didn't matter what the heck I did to it.......

Not sure on the year on yours John...It sort of looks like a 413C/D US equivalent, based on the tank ends and the decal. Doug

The Decal says "Coleman...Prevent Forest Fires"
Never saw that one before. Wonder If I can get a replacement?

John, Your stove seems to be a curious combination of many different features. What else is stamped in the metal by the handle other than the coleman name?

John..I asked over on the Coleman forum...got 1 reply...he said it was a late 50's stove. There were like 50 views on it, so maybe not many people knew about it.

I took my 417B apart tonight. I had to take a grinder to one of the screws holding the mixing body to the box. All the others would come out, but this one was tough. Penetrating oil wouldn't touch it. Now I need to take an EZ out to get the screw out of the casting. It had some pretty serious rust. Plan is to get it blasted tomorrow and begin stripping the rest of the parts. It's a good Daytona project to work on during the race....Go Jeffie 24! Doug

Finished it up today. Yup...that is approximately the correct color, based on what I found when I sanded the existing paint. I still need to get the original decal...the guy is moving so it's a couple of weeks off. Hammer finish on the tank. The legs are black and still drying. Lots of little bends in the box on this one...a lighter color hides a lot of that. Maybe I'll fire it up tomorrow. A 69 year old stove is reborn! Doug

Do you use an enamel spray over the paint on the gas tank so the gas doesn't eat away the paint? Also, what brand of paint did you use?

Is there only one source for the replacement decals?
