Euell Gibbons used to be my Hero!!!

Oh, I remember him well...my mother was very much into edible plants and even taught classes locally. Stalking the Wild Asparagus was one of the many edible plant books we had (and used) in our home library (I still have it). I even won 1st place in the science fair when I was in 8th grade for my project on edible plants - complete with samples...sumac lemonade, anyone???

The first thing that always came to mind as far back as I can remember whenever his name was mentioned was 'Quack'. Don't know why that was/is but............. maybe had something to do with the eating a pine tree thing I dunno.

Euell Gibbons used to be my Hero!!!
In fact, I still have a Wild Hickory Nut signed and given to me from Euell Gibbons..............

What comes to my mind most about Euell Gibbons is a cookbook he put out that had a pumpkin pie recipe in it that he claimed was the most delicious pie he ever ate. It was in the 70's and David & I were on a health food kick and were trying different recipes. His recipe made the nastiest tasting pie I have ever come across. David who has a sweet tooth and isn't fussy wouldn't eat that pie. We took one or two bites at the most and throw it in the trash. I've never thrown away a pie before or since that one.
Needless to say we didn't trust what he had to say about the rest of the recipes in the book.
