Offset Hinges

Postby asianflava » Sun Aug 14, 2005 4:16 am

I am getting close to hanging the doors. I have a set of offset hinges from Grant. I was wondering how to seal the hinge side. It looks like water can enter from in between the hinge leafs (leaves?) and pin. I thought that there would be enough room to put the weather stripping in between the leafs compressed by the hinge when closed. I tried it, but it looked too tight.

The rest of the door looks easy, just attach the T-moulding to the perimiter then attach the door seal to the back of the T-moulding.

On mine I I first cut the gap where the hinge is going to go to about 3/8 inch. Then I install door edge trim to both the wall and the door, using silicon sealer between the trim and the wall and door. I then used silicon sealer between the hinge and both of the previous trim pieces. Gooped it up good so sealer went all the way around the corner and came out the back of the hinge. Lastly I used a very thin gasket tape in the hinge itself, right up next to the knuckles of the hinge. It all seems to work pretty well. Grant sugested that I migh want to run a piece of rain gutter down the front side of the hinge for extra protection. Sounds kinda like a guy wearing a belt and suspenders to me. What I have seems to work but If I ever develop a leak that's what I will try next/

The trickieat part is getting the corners to seal. I nade some mistakes right there and don't have a very good fit at the front corners of the door. I filled the corners with silicon, left the doors open until dry, and then shaped them just a bit with a razor knife. Right now I don't leak there at least. My trailer is a restored 1947 and I used the original windows which leak badly. I havent had time to really work on that problem yet.

So you just used thin weatherstripping inside the hinge? How is it holding up?
