I started reading this mini forum a couple of weeks ago and now i'm hooked.


I just bought a Thermos 2 mantel lantern off Ebay.


I found an old 220H that my dad had in the 70's. Its in pretty good shape.

I also found an old railroad lantern at an antique shop. It has a Pensyvania RR logo on the globe, But it was converted to electric along time ago and it has a real cool flickering flame type bulb in it that still works so I'm going to clean it up and rewire it and hang it in my family room.

Yea I'd say I'm hooked 3 lanterns in a couple of weeks.

This is a picture of the 220H that I got from Dad. It has a few piant chips on the top but everything else is in pretty good shape. It has not been used in years.

Gene...I'm willing to bet that with some fuel, a shot of oil on the pump leather and some mantles that one is a burner, appears to have had an easy life! It's a really nice original 35 year old lantern. Doug

I think your right. I have to pick up some mantles and some fuel.


What type of oil do you use on the pump leathers it does seem to be dry.

It never was used alot mostly at boy scout camporees. and with the date being 9 73 that was about the time that Dad was thinking of giving up the scoutmaster job.


I also got a gas stove from the same era. I use it with propane but it was originaly gas. does that hurt anything inside them?

I just use some motor oil on the leather, but mineral, or 3 in 1 would work. Bend the leather backwards like an umbrella. check for cracks in it...if it's not bad, just soak it in some oil to get it more pliable so it will seal the pump tube. You can also get a rebuild kit for the pump...Wally World has them, alas...they are rubber however. Good luck with it! Doug

I just checked it and the leather don't seem to have any cracks so I oiled it up. Now all I need is the mantels and some gas.


One other question how long will coleman gas stay good in the factory sealed can?

I have a can here thats maybe 6 years old but its never been opened.

Coleman gas will stay good for years. I'm sure your six year old gas is just fine!

Gene....nothing wrong in buying up or collecting them, unless you get out of control... For me, it's something fun to do since I don't have a trailer build going right now. I get an incredible amount of pleasure in bringing back to life some forgotten piece of camping equipment that someone doesn't see value in or having the tools/ability to restore them, and making them available for others to see and enjoy. It's just a little bit of camping history brought back to life.

I've been given a number of lanterns from older couples whose wives come into my store, restored them, gave them pics of them operating with new paint and polish and they just got a great big smile and told me some stories about using them on fishing/camping trips. Made it all worth while to me. I just need to figure out how to haul my "Gas Pressure Appliance Museum" to the future gatherings.... Doug

I probably would Rick...but my Ranger won't pull doubles! I am thinking about a multiple storage box with sliders for some of the more vintage stoves however. Just gotta make it all fit, with all the firewood, and other crap that I typically haul! Doug
