Tires made in China

Postby Frog » Tue Mar 03, 2009 1:59 am

I am curious as to how tires made in China hold up. I have two 4.80 X 8 six ply rated tires I've had on a lightly used utility trailer for about a year and so far they seem OK.

With 8" and 12" tires, I would imagine it is difficult to find a variety of manufacturers that supply tires in those sizes. I haven't found any 8" American made tires in years here in California. It would follow that just the variety of tires available may be some advantage to 13" or larger tires.

Anyway, thanks for indulging me on this.

If it says Duro Run away run away real fast :x

Carlisle Tires are available at any Wal Mart in the automotive department and almost every farm type store.

Can you say ply seperation ?

Duro's answer to my call for warranty help can be summed up with 3 letters "TFB"

I always thought Carlisle tires were made in China. I called a dealer and he said he thought they were made in Tennessee. Learn something new every day.

There is a code on each and every tire that has the manufacturer and a date code. The date code is in the format week and year like WWYY. There are also some letters sand these identify the plant where it was made. This website has a list http://www.harriger.com/tires.htm

The codes which provide more information are routinely moulded into only the inside sidewall, making them tough to find. Since it is just a cryptic code, anyone looking for an indication of country of origin (without knowing about the coding) is unlikely to find it.

This is a general situation for tires, not specific to trailer tires or products made in China.

Sure hope my experience continues to be better than yours bobhenry :worship: . I bought my HF trailer in Jan 2006 & finished my build in Sep 2006 (at least enough to camp in, I don't call it 'finished' yet ;) ). We've towed it in excess of 6K miles, probably more'n 8K(?) & no problems with the tires/wheels/bearings yet. Never even thought to look at the brand name 'til I read your post. Went out yesterday & looked, sure enough it says DURO on the tires  . Can't detect any sign of ply separation & the tread is in better shape than the Carlisle tires on my utility/ATV trailer that has more miles on it?? I did clean & repack the original bearings before starting out on our first 'long' trip. Also had my son who has a NAPA store bring me a spare set of bearings & seals that I carry already packed, in Ziplok bags 'just in case.' :D
