Whats your 1st sign of Spring in your area?

Postby BillandMarijo » Thu Mar 05, 2009 5:25 pm

Today it was 55 in my town of Altoona Pennsylvania. A beautiful sunny day. But I have been searching for the sure sign of Spring, a red Robin. This was such a cold winter so believe me when you see your first red Robin its a big deal. My husband Bill comes home for lunch and tells me "Oh yea I saw a red Robin today" well with me anyways seeing is believing. I set out for my first Robin sighting. Sure enough exactly where Bill saw her, there she was gathering twigs for her nest. Well now I know Spring is here.

Around here, the first sign of spring is when the retired folks start coming back from Arizona.

Other signs of spring include buds on the aspen trees, and red squirrels waking me up in the morning.

More than 3 days in a row above freezing would be good!!! 8)
Haven't seen any Robins yet, just as soon not see them, they get to be a royal pain here!
I did hang the bed clothes out today and they dried!!

No robins in the hitterdal area but for the first time on the way home the lake ice looked really sloppy on top. Snowbirds have not returned either.

It's been a little cool here on the east coast. 57 degrees this evening. Roses are starting to bud, and the orange trees have blossoms. But the biggest sign of spring is when we look down at the river and the cruising boats are heading north again. So far it's just every now and then, but in a couple of weeks the daily boat parade will begin.

Yeah, I noticed a few around here, too. It hit 85 here in Topeka today!!!!

I noticed the Daffodills (SP) poking up through the dead leaves but the clencher for me is when the Turkey Vultures come back and start circling over an area that is on my way to work. When THEY start to congregate, Spring is not far off. It's usually a couple of weeks before the calender says it's Spring but I've never seen them with a calender.
I also watch them in the Fall because they do the same thing. It's pretty cool to see them all spiraling in a big tornado, 40 or 50 strong. They are migratory like Canadian Geese and I've seen them heading North, too.
