Lady builder**building first tear

Postby MsDana » Fri Mar 06, 2009 10:42 pm

Ok so here I go. Never built a tear. Im gonna give her a go. Soooo..I have pictures but I gotta wait till tommorow to load um up. Well I didnt get any plans. Im gonna wing it. I love emoticons. Anyway, I was gonna buy a new harbor freight trailer but Ive had an old popup bottom sitting in my yard for a couple of years now. I decided it would work. Soooo I tore it back to the frame yesterday. Today we repacked the bearings and it got new seals. Ground the rust off the frame..etc..and painted it. Its gonna be a 6X9. My wish list is a queen size bed, small sink, table, water storage tank for just in case there is no water where im going, oh and a small kitchen out back. Im thinking all wood. Was gonna do a metal roof but I changed my mind. Question?? Anyone ever use Advantec for the floor? Ace has had a sheet laying in a mud puddle in Blue Ridge for the last 5 years. It still is not swollen! Gonna put the floor on tommorow..maybe. :R
PS..not using the advantec from the puddle :o

Free plans in the menu. They will help keep you tracking in the right direction. However---dig out the camera and go for it.

No flooring panel has a better reputation for quality or performance. AdvanTech flooring's moisture resistance, design bending strength and design stiffness are superior in comparison to commodity OSB or plywood.

The only thing I see wrong is the tongue and grove will need trimming. Not sure of the price though. Might be way out of my range........

You will need to plan where to put fastners and be sure to have "real wood" to screw in the end grain. Also check the site for the best type of fasteners.

Hey Danny..Good advice..well I really meant to say that I didnt buy plans. Ive drawn out my own. Also have spent every spare min the last two weeks researching tears and other small trailer styles. I know Im gonna have lots of questions as I go along. Im hoping you guys might help me out if I get stuck. There is a lot of talent at this site. I will load up plans and pics tommorow so you can see if ya want. :)

Hello Miriam! Advantec is about $20 a sheet right now. Im gonna need 2! Im gonna plan for the split in the sheets and the t&g will be trimmed off to have a square side. Im not sure about the fasteners...Im thinking of useing some specially coated torque head deck screws I already have to attach the deck. The wooden frame will be bolted to the metal frame of the trailer. Thanks for the information on the advantec. I think Im going with the thinner for weight because my bed is on a slight platform and Im not really walkin around on it. Haha! Thanks Again!! Your great! :applause:

May be your first teardrop but sounds as if it isn't the first thing you've ever built. Looking forward to 'watching' your build

MsDana,

No plan building is fun and can stimulate the imagination.... That's the way I do it anyway. I start with a concept and flow with it. 8)

Thanks you guys! Fun yes ..easy No! Just because I can build a house does not mean that I wont run into challenges. But working thru this is exciting. I have someone helping me grinding and rebuilding the trailer frame. Actually Im helping them  But really Im better with woodwork. Not so much with grinding and welding. Well..dont have to  Im hoping to license it on Monday or Tuesday. Then Im down for a couple of weeks until I finish up a remodel project. :drofl:

And Steve..Yesssss!..Thats what I say!!

It's in the Bag

Postby NebraskaTeachr » Sat Mar 07, 2009 5:01 pm

Ms Dana,

General building skills take away a lot of questions about "now how does that work?". You have it in the bag girl! Have fun building.

Michele..I love your trailer! you are very creative and quite and artist. I love the pink! Love the flowers! I have a few pics in my phone of my work this weekend but Ive got to wait till my daughter gets home with the lil chip so i can transfere them to my laptop. Just an ugly frame so far but its no longer a pop up. Thanks for the support. Dana :D

Thanks for the complement on my trailer.

Hey, are you anywhere near Vogel State Park in North GA?

I'm going to be staying there the first week in May if you want to stop by and see my trailer. I had never seen a home built trailer when I was building mine and it sure would have been helpful to me if I had seen one.

Hey MsDana,

Sounds like fun... no plans and all.

Did you take any pictures yet?
