SCOOOOOORE 62 Metzendorf

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Postby greg755 » Sun Mar 08, 2009 2:58 pm

Rick,
Mine Says Farmington, OH (I think that's what it says, will have to double check)

From what I have read, Metzendorf was a husband and wife team, they delivered each trailer themselves to the clients home. The story goes they started in the late fifties and ended in the early 70's.

Supposedly as the story goes Mrs. Metzendorf was delivering a trailer and it got away from her, she either lost the use of one of her arms or lost the arm, they decided to call it quits...

I will re google it later and post more, there is a guy who has a blog on Metzendofr's' and he and others get together from time to time, I think they are going to meet in Sampson park this year...

Got the 63 Scotty home last night around 10 pm, but that is another story in itself and I will start a new thread, with pictures

I really hoping that this was a 1960, that is what I am looking for, but will settle on the 62. I have to find out what the vin number means it is 0025 so I want to know if that is the 25th trailer, 25th for the year or 25th for that model....

Perhaps you have already come across the Tincan Tourist list of manufacturers searching for info. It would be interesting to contact Brin Metzendorf to get a full story from his relatives.

Perhaps even add a picture of your model with the cab over (or whatever you call it). I have added to the dowiki on other models that I have, and would definitely try a follow up on the Metzendorf if I owned one.

Cliff- All but the top picture on that dowiki site are of my Metzendorf, that were taken before we bought it. I didn't post them there. I wonder who did?

Rick,
Did you see the dowiki prior to me mentioning it here?

I am curious as to when Brin/Brian Metzendorf posted the history. It would be really cool if someone could do a video interview of Martin Metzendorf (if still on this earth), with regards to the trailers being made by the Amish. There is a lot of history lost through generations. If only trailers could talk.

No Cliff, never knew it existed. Those pictures were taken by the previuos owner for a flyer she had made up to hang in her shop(that's how I found the Metz)and to post on the internet.
There is a gentleman named Gary Woolschlager who also lives in the Syracuse area, who also owns a 60 Metzendorf and he did some pretty extensive research on the subject. I haven't seen or heard from him since the first ADK Tear-Up. He had all sorts of brochures and I believe he also contacted some of the Metzendorf family. He would definately be the guy to talk to.

Started ripping her down today.

DAY ONE:
Took out the front windows.

Took off the door and door frame. Going to rebuild it and make it a right hand door instead of the left hand door as it is now. I never understood why they made doors that open towards the tongue...

Took off all lights.

Took off storage compartment door.

Took off the old wiring harness, fridge, stove and propane tank/holder.

Cleaned up the inside all looks good except some water damage just as you step inside on the floor, a little patch on the back drivers corner and a small patch on the drivers ceiling just before the cab over, Hopefully these wont turn into major issues...

Is there an ID/NAME tag somewhere?
I saw a trailer for sale the other day; it had the overhead bunk, so now I'm curious as to the make if it.........

It's about an hour away, so I might just make the drive to take a closer look at it.

Get pictures, some of the paint schemes on the outside help ID them. Looking at the ads, Kenskill had the X=Model, overhead, but only 1960-63

DAY TWO

Removed the 2 windows on the passenger side.

Removed front end cap moldings, removed aluminum in front end.

Found a lot of rot at the front bunk (that was hidden from an earlier repair) as seen in pictures, someone covered up the rot with some strips of wood and a piece of plywood where the bunk bed is. All this is going to be torn out and replaced...

Ordered 3 aluminum 4 X 8 sheets to replace the two end pieces that had the big dents in them.

see photos here:

And it looked so purdy on the outside..... :(

Coop,

Thanks for the post, and sad to know this gentleman passed away. I guess the interest of an interview was a couple years to late. These are the reasons, trailerites should record history like this.

And for all you amateur radio operators, Karl Gerlt was an avid ham radio operator. If someone was interested enough to try and make contact with the family, here is his last known P.O.Box. Perhaps it may still be maintained, or forwarding address.

If I owned a Metzendorf, I would surely do the leg work in getting any collective history from his family (if willing).

Day THREE and FOUR

Okie Dokie

Got the one and only soft spot in the floor tore out, new wood installed, screwed glued, caulked, as good as new...

Front lower half and bunk area all rebuilt inside and out, used 3/4 plywood instead of the original half inch, where possible.

Took out a lot of nails thus far and common rusty screws, all are being replaced with stainless steel screws. No nails for this old girl...

Everything is also being Glued together as well, guess they didn't use much glue back in 62....

A couple extra braces here and there won't hurt either...

Day FIVE and SIX

Finished rebuilding the rest of the cab over with the outside cross members.

Took the door apart, some heavy duty security there... Needs to be completely re-done, will replace the original Bergman lock with something better. Will keep the original windows.

Replaced wood on upper right side that caused all the leaking up front.

Removed the skin and some rotten wood from the back.

Started fabricating the door and the new panels to replace the dented ones.
