Mini Scotty Hilander... back on...siding started

Postby Mark McD » Sun Mar 08, 2009 7:03 pm

Okay, so some of you may remember I started a build a few weeks back.
I started out planning on building a weekender on steroids, a slouchie, if you will, but I couldn't warm up to the profile once I mocked it up. I then decided I could make it a pop-up a la the Compact 3 but decided that was way too much work and cash. So I decided on this profile- it's a 3/4 scale version of a Scotty Hilander, inspired by Len's builds. I kept myself from posting info and pics till now because I figured one false start was enough. Hoping to get a lot done later in the week as I will have a few days off and a few bucks may be liberated from the budget for materials.
Specs:
10'0 long
70" high
6'4" wide

:o  Will be watching this one. One thing I would do is ease that top corner. Might make bending the plywood over it easier....Shouldn't take much.

Aunti M,
I'm going to use wiggle wood, aka bending ply, to make that tight radius. Shouldn't be a problem...I've bent tighter radii. I've wrapped 4" lally columns with bending ply so that 9" radius should be okay. I think. I hope. If not, I have a back up plan I'm researching now.

Mark, that looks real nice BUT I don't think your 78 Mini is going to cope very well pulling it down the hi-way, much less up a hill...and stopping...fuhgettaboutit :D  ;) .................

You gotta love building what ya want. I'm about 1/3 of the way into building my dream trailer and enjoy getting a couple hours a day to pick away at it. Spend 8 or 10 a day on the weekends. Good luck with your build, can't wait to see some more pics.

Barry and Darby,
I'm hoping to have the stringers in and the interior headliner on so I should have more pics by the weekend. I really need to put some time in so I can have this thing ready for Memorial day.

I just picked up the ply for my roof. In case anyone wants to know a 4x8 sheet of 1/8 birch bending plywood,is $26.07,(USD), per sheet. I would have gotten laun bending ply 'cuz it would have been a few bucks cheaper but they were out of stock. I also picked up 6 sheets of standard 1/8 laun plywood for $7.00,(USD), per 4x8 sheet. Hoping to get the roof spars in and skin on this weekend.

Looking good! :applause:

It just may be me but do you think one more spar where the edge transitions from a curve to straight would be in order? It seems a long way between spars and especially at a transition.

But what do I know?

Mark,
Man,you don't miss a thing. :) I left out a few spars til I get some skins on so I can position the ply seams over a spar.Once I get the piece on that makes the curve/tangent/curve section,(bending birch), I'll know the exact location. I also be adding a few vertical pieces as nailers for the benches, etc and the spare wheel mount. Thanks for the input, it's good to have people to point out stuff that I,(we), may have missed. That's why I love this forum.
