I agree generally with the clear comparison which Andrew provided... except one note:

Passenger car limits are routinely less than half the tug's weight, and "full-size" pickup trucks are certainly an exception, but a very significant fraction of the vehicles on the road allow trailers much heavier than half of their curb weight.

All but the smallest SUVs and minvans allow 3500 lb or more (if properly equipped with prep packages, and most are properly equipped), and weigh no more than about two tonnes (2000 kg or 4400 lb). While those full-size pickups routinely have towing limits greater than their curb weight, even mid-sized pickup trucks (and the SUVs based on them) do as well.

The extreme case is still that of the big pickups, with the "one ton" models (GM/Chev 3500, Dodge 3500, Ford F-350) towing double their curb weight of conventional trailer (and more as fifth-wheels), but some of the smaller trucks are not that far off.
