Vinyl Wraps

Postby Tommy2tone_1999 » Thu Mar 12, 2009 10:36 am

This may be an alternative for painted graphics or sheet metal. Has anyone finished the outside of their teardrops with a vinyl wrap like those used on company vehicles to advertise their products or logo?

Thats what I do for a job... and it'd be a lot easier than most think on something like a TD... it's mostly flat panels and these days you can get whats called a bubble-free vinyl... on flat panels its quite easy to install and get good results.

No idea what prices are like over there... but there are a good few with printers, so you should be able to barter a good price at your local sign shop. Majority of sign makers are a good bunch who will take an interest in your TD and be glad to be a part of something a little out of the ordinary.

Good thing with vinyl wraps... if you can imagine a design, no matter how complicated, you can have it designed up and printed in a matter of hours and have it applied to your TD the following day. Makes a massive transformation to commercial vehicles, so to TD, providing the design and images are good to begin with... it'll really spruce it up :D

Thanks! I have many more ideas in the works for it but I need the time!

I'm thinking about doing a similar color scheme and same type of siding. Probably go with more silver and black accents as opposed to your black with silver accents.

I'm guessing that you have to have a pretty smooth surface to mount though?

Doesn't necessarily have to be a totally smooth surface... there is a product available that has a very strong adhesive that will wrap to uneven surfaces and still wrap around tight curves. Used it to wrap a tractor for a promotion event. It has the unfortunate trait that once the vinyl touches the surface you can't snatch it back, so you need to be sure you know what you're doing with that stuff.

I think it is printable as well, so design wise, the limit is your imagination.

Graphic cost in Maryland

Postby Laeka » Thu Mar 19, 2009 8:44 am

Guy down the street from us does the vinyl as a business called Hide Your Ride. 4'X8' sheet of graphic, you provide the picture, $450 installed. If I remember right he said it should last around 3-4 years. A while back I found an incredible pic in a childrens book that looked like a jungle scene pulled from a wood block print. If I ever get around to building the trailer... Daniel

Does he wear a mask and carry a black and white striped bag with swag written on it?

Seriously, if you're paying more than $80 - $100 for the print, thats still $350 to stick it on... I could show you how to apply it with diagrams... might take you a bit of practise, but the panels of the majority of TDs are flat... $350 to stick it on is way too much in my humble opinion.

I worked it out in GBP and converted it to Dollars... I've been wrapping cars for a good while... everything from Ferraris to tractors to commercial vehicles and $450 for an 8x4 printed wrap is a bit expensive on a TD. Don't get me wrong, everyone has to earn a living, but I've done flat paneled trucks much bigger than 8x4 for a lower price than that.
