The "Nameless Monster" build journal

Postby jollymon1375 » Tue Mar 24, 2009 9:22 am

It's been a little while since I last posted, so here it goes....

If the photos don't post in this message, please check out my album!

I finished the steel work on the trailer, all I have left is to prime and paint. Since I've decided to make the beast modular (I'd like to remove the camper body so I can still use the trailer for it's original purpose) I'm going to prime and paint once the weather gets a little more predictable.

Here it is so far:
Image

I built the "basement" and coated it in Black Jacks roof sealant.

Sorry I don't have any pics with the roof coating.

Next I move on to the side walls, it took a lot longer than I planned.

Got them mounted and started framing the front.

A goody came in the mail today!!! The front window from e-bay!!!
Image

The test fit. It works!
Image

Well, I finished the side walls, the front wall and the roof spars. I roped a friend of mine into helping me test fit the beast to the trailer
Image
Image

SUCCESS!!!!! :D

The thing is a little taller than I was expecting but oh well!! It sits at about 7 feet. The top of the jeep is 6'3" so not to bad!!

More to come!!!

Yeah, I hi-lighted the url , clicked copy. inserted the url into my message by clicking paste. I then hi-lighted the line and clicked the Img button. At that point it put the [img] brackets and this is the result? I'm confused!! :?

I have no idea. I can open your album, grab a pic, and post it fine. But the code on mine looks identical to the code on yours, and you get no pic. I even tried editing yours, no luck.

I just tried it again, and now I can't make it work! :?

hmm... I added one of mine, and now they both work (in preview, anyway). Might be an issue with the forum software.

Your build looks great so far.

Just a warning. Most commercial campers with front windows have a close down awning over them. I have a window on the front of mine and had no problems when I was towing it with a truck with a campershell because the air stream off the tow vehicle cleared the window but when I went to a truck with a hard bed cover it changed the air stream and now the window leaks when towing in the rain. Not nice crawling into a soaking wet bed after a long pull through a down pour.

Hopefully you don't have the same problem.

Your pics are there now. Did you fix them, or did some glitch in the software get repaired?

I didn't do anything, maybe the hiccup fixed itself of the forum spirits smiled upon us!

Thanks for the idea Ray! My plan is to install an awning over it with a piano hinge that will flip up. I plan on sealing the hinge with a rubber strip so I don't end up with wet pillows!

I'm so happy the build is finally off the ground so to speak. I'm finishing the roof this afternoon then it's getting taken off the frame and brought back into the carport (too tall). Next is the insulation and window install.

I like the way you used the trailer without changing it.

How did you attach the camper to the trailer. You said something about being able to remove it from the trailer.

I plan on using 1/2"x1 3/4" bolts straight through the 3/4" plywood floor into the rails of the trailer. To reinforce the connection, I'm going to use uni-strut the length of the camper floor. That way there is a solid steel-wood-steel sandwich.

2 50cc scooters, they come to a total weight of about 375lbs. When the scooters are on the tongue and no camper body on the trailer I can lift the tongue by myself. It hurts a little though. But since the camper is pretty much center over the wheels there shouldn't be a big change in tongue weight. I'm going to be adding a bumper and a spare tire carrier to the rear so I'm hoping that'll help balance things out.
