I think there are a few people here interested in adding small gas engines to bicycles and I thought of you when I saw this - Ettore Bugatti designed a 'cyclemotor' power unit during WWII and, as you would expect, it's a flight of fancy - 12cc, double overhead cams, and a supercharger! With a piston of less than 1" bore, the 15,000-18,000rpm working speed doesn't seem that high......

That little engine is really cool. Reading the article reminded me of the "big bore" kits that we would install on the VW beetles back in the late 60's. Imagine going to Bugatti and ordering up the big bore kit....24mm instead of 22mm...wow, power out the wazoo!

Now you are going to make me go out and buy a busted up moped and some tubing. Now the teardrop will have to wait longer while I build a salt flats ride.


If someone wanted to do a motorized bike these folks have some ideas and parts. Not sure it would be the best method but it is interesting.

Thy are great but unfortunate not street legal in all states. I spoke with some folks that was stopped fined for the bike, was going over 19 mph and it had a gas motor plus no running lights, bumper, seat belt, turn singles, break light etc I no it sounds dumb but if you get one check your local laws.

I just purchased and I'm waiting for my motor to arrive. I saw a guy on a bike with a motor and he did really good on our Pittsburgh hills and I decided I would get one. I went on a trip and felt like I would die on the return trip and realized this would get me back when I needed extra help.

Have not seen it for years, but there used to be a swedish bicycle with a motor mounted over the front wheel with a roller drive... tried to find it on google, but no luck... name began with an S.... will see if I can find it.. probably long out of business what with volvo and saab..

I mounted a 2 cycle engine over the back wheel when I was a kid, with a roller drive, but it got little use.. too top heavy.

I'm guessing that you're referring to the Sweden in France, not the one in Scandinavia....?
