Pennsylvania Trailer Registration

Postby gusto » Fri Mar 13, 2009 11:19 pm

I registered my redtrailers.com trailer two days ago with essentially zero problems, due to some knowledge I'd gleaned from the following threads:

http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=26678&highlight=register+trailer

http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=22138&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=register+trailer&start=0

I was not subjected to an inspection, which is a requirement for "specially constructed vehicles", I merely had to produce the notarized MCO, the bill of sale and some money, and I walked out with a plate and the promise of a real registration in the mail in several weeks.

I think the key is that the MCO did not contain the word "kit" anywhere. The vehicle type was specified as "trailer". That's just a theory. As far as the non-inspection deal, I'd certainly be wary of some home-assembled trailers you see careening around the Pennsylvania highways, but I think mine is up to snuff. :)

Way Cool!!! Now it's on to sawdust time!!!

BTW... getting mine registered in Mississippi was just as easy. Actually the pieces for my HF trailer were still in the cardboard boxes when I did it. I just took the paperwork to the county clerks office, paid the fees, and walked out with the plates. Assembled the trailer afterwards. Four weeks later, the title came in the mail.

Yes, mine is a similar story, except that my trailer already has the insulated floor bolted down, I have walls cut out and I'm working on the cabinets. I really didn't feel like slapping the lights, etc, on the trailer and dragging it out of my work space just to get it inspected (and you should've seen the form involved in that!).

I've never had a problem registering HF or other trailers in Ohio. After I learned the hard way. :? The certificate of origin has the trailer weight on it. That's all you need here. Oh, and the receipt. So if anyone in Ohio needs to register a kit trailer just take those two items to the DMV. I'm having more trouble trying to title a Chinese enduro motorcycle. It's basically the same process but they want the dealer I bought the bike from to fax a bill of sale directly to the DMV. I had the receipt and the C.O.O. but that wasn't enough. Funny thing about the government- I asked ten different people the process and was told ten different answers.

I'm originally from New york State. I believe the NY and PA regulations are pretty similar. It probably all boils down to the mood of the clerk you get on any particular day and how deep they want to get into your wallet!!!

I had to clear up a problem with the city about having too many unregistered vehicles in my yard down here in Mississippi. I went in this week with a hand written bill of sale for the boat trailer I'm building #2 or #3 on (depends on which gets finished first) and a pencil rubbing of the VIN plate. Cost me $10.00 and I should have the title in 4-6 weeks.

I think the key was the MCO with a vehicle type of just "trailer" and the fact that I had a bill of sale that indicated sales tax. Keep in mind that I'm a Pennsylvania resident, and RedTrailers.com is a Pennsylvanian company, so I just happened to pay sales tax by chance! That's apparently one less form you have to fill out.

Yours is the norm for any homebuilt trailer frame.

PA is a mess. I've never fought so hard to give somebody money for nothing in my life.

Happy Trails
