A little bead blasting, paint and a few hours careful work will get you this.... if you are talented.

That is the only thing I knew how to do. Thanks for the instructions, I would have been lost without them. It lit on the first flick which shocked me.
Great job but I will have to laminate the instructions, I can't remember all of that stuff.

Doug , nice work on this one. Are you painting the frames on your lantern rebuilds or just cleaning them up?

I'm spraying them with a high temp aluminum, once I get them cleaned of any rust and crud. What's kind of a drag is after all the polishing on the brass...first time you fire it up...that starts to go away. Only a shelf queen stays highly polished. Doug

What mantles did you use? Those look like the are to big. The mantle has the wrong shape. Once buren in & lit, they should "balloon up". They should not look like they do in your picture.

Bright Light is the brand. i got them a couple years ago to use in my trailer. I believe I got them from Lehman's. I thought a mantle was mantle. I thought size mattered only to muscle bound midgets on TV ads.

Size does matter on lanterns also. You need some #21 mantles. The #21 is the most common one you will find. They have them at Walmart & most stores that sell camping gear.

Nice old 228 ya got there! Stay away from the insta clip mantels. Once they are burnt in any little vibration will cause them to start deteriorating around that metal clip. At least that has been my experience. It is easier to get more life out of the string tie models.

Doug has been doing me a few favors because I sold him a trashy old stove to mess with. He gets bored in the winter time when he cannot camp out.

I was just pointing out in my own silly way that very few people do as nice of restoration as Doug does. The stove came out amazing. I'm wondering when he'll turn a corner of the fabric store into Doug's Coleman Museum?

Jeremy...check out that chart....I don't see a 228 anywhere on it. They use the #21 but it ain't listed anwhere. Doug

That's funny. I never noticed that before & that was made by Coleman. Maybe because the 220 & 228 are the same lantern besides the vent & bail so they thought they did not need to list it. There is another mantle list I have seen. I will find it post it.
