The rest:

I had damage, but nothing that couldn't be repaired, plus no one was killed.

I am thankful.

Oh girl, you were flat out lucky. One of the things I fear where we live is really high wind. We are surrounded by trees..........

Better luck this year I hope.

you know what I have learned in 47 years...pine trees don't handle tornadoes well..I say we kill all the pine trees and spread out the trailer parks and I do believe this will stop the tornado outbreak..

or not..

Glad your still around to talk about it.

I freaking hate pine trees, too. However, my 2 hickory trees in my front yard fell in the tornado and one of them took out my neighbor's car. My huge oak in the back was ok, and the other hickory in the back developed a 45 degree lean and I had to cut it down. But, it was mainly all of the pine trees that fell and did the most damage.

The first time I was hit by a tornado in 1999, it was my 200 yr. old oak that fell on my garage/upstairs area, and my neighbor's house. It took a giant crane and over $5000 to get it off both our houses!!!

I am not too fond of tornadoes.

What general area are you located in. I left 50 yrs ago but made it back for a High School reunion in '06. My grandmother's old house down on Scott St is still standing but not by much after meeting a tornado 8-9 yrs ago.

Right now, I am in Cammack Village, near the Heights. I used to live at 22nd and Center just down from the Governor's Mansion. The tornado that hit your grandmother's house must have been the one that hit me in 1999. That was the one that flattened the Harvest Foods and killed someone in there.

Can't say I recognized much of the Cammack Village any more but I do remember it. That was the turn around for the city bus bakk then ('50's). We had a tiny little house near the LR Golf course, 4623 Stonewall Rd. Spent my high school years there. No tornadoes hit LR when I was there but there was an infamous one the wiped most of Judsonia in 1952.

Happy to see you survived.

Dennis:

Thanks for the link to your pictures. I looked at your other albums, too. Very cute Cairn terrier!

I probably walked by your old house today with my dogs. We walked all the way down Kavanugh and turned at Cheers restaurant/Teri's Finer Foods, and came all the way back up Stonewall before heading back to Cammack.

Becca:

It was a lucky night, that's for sure. The house next door to me that was destroyed was owned by this woman who was 90 yrs. old. She had fallen and broken her hip about 2 weeks before the storm and was still in the hospital. If she had been home during the tornado, she probably would have been killed when the giant pine tree fell and crushed her house.

I think somebody with a lot of power was watching over that little ole' lady!

My sister was in a tornado in 1984 and I mean she was in it! It was 11:15 a.m., Sunday, February 12, 1984 and I was at mom's dropping off something or another. My sister lived in a mobile home across the road about an acre away. Mom asked me to go drop off something at Chelle's (my sister) and I told her I couldn't cause we had to go eat lunch at my hubby's mom's house 12 miles away. Well, when I walked thru the door at my mother-n-law's, she was on the phone with my mother, who was hysterical by this time, trying to tell me a tornado had hit and they couldn't find Gary, Chelle's husband. First thought was, oh crap, he got sucked away. My mom failed to tell me that he was with my dad riding around the countryside and they couldn't find 'them' to tell him. (No cell phones in those days).

I think my husband and I made it back in 10 minutes flat to Chelle's demolished mobile home. She had just taken a bath, got into her bedroom, had enough time to put on her jeans (and that's all) when the walls began to "breathe" and that's all she remembers. The tornado lifted her home up and over and blew it up. She crawled out of the debris with scratches on her back and a life-long fear of bad weather.

My dad and her hubby, Gary, drove up as the ambulance took her away for observation. There was only a couple of things that we could salvage...the rest was strewn for miles.

The next day my dad gave her a $10 bill and she asked what that was for...he said someone gave it to him to thank Chelle for the tornado "peep-show". We had the best laugh off that one.
