Front window protection

Postby Toytaco2 » Sun Apr 05, 2009 9:49 pm

I put a window in the front of our TD as the photo shows. We felt we wanted the extra light and the ability to see out the front.

I also made this window cover to mount in front of it.

The funky looking corners on the top are to enable the cover to fit up under the drip cap that is yet to be mounted above the window. However, the actual mounting of the cover is proving to be a bigger challenge than I ever thought it would be since I would like to have it easily removable without tools and above all - simple. Here's my question: Do I even need it at all (it looks better without it)? Maybe the tongue box directly under it would provide some protection from the TV kicking up road debris? Not being an experienced "trailer puller" I don't know what to expect and how much risk there is of the front window being broken.

Thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Completion and camping are close at hand and this is about the last issue left.

:applause:    You are right, your td is beautiful without the cover. Removable is definitely the way to go. Any hinge will work if you get a linchpin to lock instead of the normal pin. Find one you like and go for it.

Be sure to lock the top or bottom too.

Good job on the Td too. It is absolute beautiful.

Best bet would be to find a two piece hinge where you can slide it into place. One piece mounted on the tear, the other on the cover. Then a lock or linch pin to hold it into place when travelling. I would definitely put this on. If it's really sunny, you can prop it open to get ventilation and look out but still have it shade from the sun.

 Cool Tear!!

I use mine as a cover while towing and then as an awning in camp!

You could also use an aluminum table mounting track (the mounting piece on the trailer would also act as a drip rail, then all you'd need is to fasten it on the bottom corners to keep it in place.

That does look sweet. . .If you are an afternoon napper that cover could come in real handy.

A quick Google search found lots of different types and styles of mud flap/splash guards.

Ivar, My Toyota Tacoma TV already has good mudflaps to cut down on the road debris being kicked up. Also, in looking around the forum, I've spotted a number of TD's with front windows and no apparent cover/protection while being towed. I do agree that using the cover as a shade is a nice benefit, but I'm wondering: Is a cover for the window all that necessary?

I guess you would only know for sure that it was worth the trouble if you ended up with a broken window and had not used the cover.

:D If you dont plan on going long distance it would be only one more thing to worry about , dont worry about it, if you want to black out for a nap make a inside shade that window if installed right the window will handle the weather on the road.
Nice awnings but if not installed right will be a #$^%$#$%%
