Wow!!!!!
What a nice build. When you start something you go ALL OUT! A really nice trailer. The little Woman has a daughter living in Decatur, Ga.--Are you close ? We go there quite often and next time we'll probably be towing the "Costa Lotta-the reason so much of the month is left at the end of the money!!"
Have you came up with a name yet?? "Simply Sweet" wood be a good one  Anyhooo-great project--what will become of that other trailer in your yard???

1st thing I noticed was how far forward the axle and doors looked. We have a lot of noobs that desire to build on a stock trailer frame without moving the axle back, What advise would you give them? What's the tongue weight with the galley loaded? If you had it to do over again, what would you do differently?

If you take a close look at my trailer, its not 8 feet long. Its only 7 feet. I had to either build it 1 foot forward, 1 foot to the rear, or split the difference. I was worried about not having enough tounge weight so I opted to build it forward. I have always been told that trailers need tongue weight to track properly. The other trailer in my yard is a motorcycle trailer and it tracks perfectly so I modeled it after that one. I haven't checked the tongue weight with the galley loaded but its on my "to do" list. I'm not sure what I would do differently. I gave this thing sooo much thought as I was building it. I guess I would change the axle. This one is designed for a much heavier load than the TD is so it has a tendacy to bounce a little going down the road.

Decatur is about 35 miles from me. Not too far.

I haven't given it a name. Do you guys name them?

very nice build!!!!! have you thought about changing those hubs so you can put regular rims on it? Mine came with the same thing so I went down to Northern tool and bought new hubs it took a few trips to get it right but it worked out well.

naming ur teardrop

Postby John T. Hodgen » Tue Apr 14, 2009 2:56 pm

Hey S. Anderson,
YES, most do name their teardrops. Costta Lotta, comes by way of a camp that I use to camp out at as a Youngin. Being from the South, "Sweeeet Thaang!!", maybe be one. "Streaming Tears" is one I like but didn't use--But with the release of my money, mistakes, etc. you can see how it could be appropiate?!!
The "Little Woman" could get involved in this process so she won't feel left out because of your Other Woman (t/d).
Anyhoo til later by the fire--John T. 8)

Thanks for the compliments everyone.

The aluminum is actually floating. It is only held on by screws along the bottom edge, the trim on the corners, and the doors. I didn't want to glue it because of the expansion/contraction of wood and metal being different.

WOW! You do really nice work. I'm sure Mama is proud too. Probably can't wait for the dang bank to close so she can get on the road with you. Could she call in sick on some of those Saturdays? Jus' kiddin' I already know the answer to that one.
What memories you two will make for yourselves.
Like everyone else on this crazy site I'm a visual learner. Keep those pictures coming.
