If you don' t use the card right after doing that, there is software that will recover the photos. It works pretty well. I've recovered a lot of photos for a lot of people.

I ended up with losing a whole days shooting in Yosemite and was devastated...until I used some recovery software and got most of them back...in fact, even tho I format the card before each use, but rarely fill them, there were images on there from several different shoots that hadn't been written over.

Google image recovery and check them out...many are free.

And the fires in the Midwest bring to mind our own firestorm in NorCal last year.

This shot was taken on our way to the coast last July, (we stopped in at IRG 2.0 to see what all the fuss was about and sealed our fate!) We were cruising along the Trinity River about 1am and stopped to take a few loooooong exposures. This one made it onto the news!!
