After being a heavy smoker for 50 years I quit and so did my wife.I was doing 2 1/2 packs of camel non filter a day Barbara was doing 1 pack of camel filter a day. It's been 30 days now and this has to be the hardest thing I've done so far. We are saving the money we would have spent on smoking to go on a cruise we figure close to 5 grand a year at today's prices

Keep it up!! I quit about 6 years ago, heavy smoker much like you . I smoked marlbros.. I do not miss them. I can do things now that were beyond my physical capabilitys then.. My wife refuses to quit. Her whole family smokes. The doctor told her mom a couple months ago that she needs a lung transplant. IF she quits for 2 years he will put her on a waiting list. Im pretty sure its not going to happen.. Me and my daughter are the only non smokers in that whole group. makes it really hard.. They say after 3 or 4 days the crap is out of your system and the rest is a mental game!! My trick?? I used the patch for a week or two. Then switched to the mini tootsie roll pops or dum dums.. I built a street rod and a teardrop camper with my savings..good luck bud!!.

Good luck! I haven't smoked in this millenium. Was up to about 3.5-4 packs a day. At 30 days you are over the worst of it. For me things got easier after the first week, then after two weeks, then six months. After a year I knew I'd never smoke again though I still have the occasional urge and even reach for the shirt pocket sometimes.

For others contemplating quitting: It seems that different folks are helped by different methods. For me it was a combination of nicotine patches and an anti-depressant as well as help from my wife who took her own habit outdoors until I was over the hump.

Best,
Tom

Way to go. I quit last May and feel alot better. Focusing on the cost saving helped me to quit and got me a new trailer. ;)

Thanks for your support Barbara and I started out with the commit lozenge they taste horrible {and give you heartburn} so we went with the patches much better, we also keep plenty of hard candy around. We are going to beat the addiction.

Thats great that you quit smoking. :D I quit 35 years ago, the wife quit 32 years ago. I bet you both are noticing the difference on how you feel and how much better you can taste your food.

This method worked for me too! A little bit on the drastic side I must admit I probably would not recommend this method to others.

Dec 26th 1983. laid an almost full pack of Salem Lights in my desk drawer. Had to look at 'em every time I opened that drawer for next several years. I'd gotten to the point (3pks or so a day) that I know they were causing me injury & my wife was becomimg more & more alergic to the smoke, so I quit cold turkey. Wuz kinda hard for first week but I wuz determined & after that just a matter of pride in not letting a bad habit 'beat me'. I'd always said if cigarettes got as high as a buck a pack I'd quit, I beat it by a few cents a pack a couple of months early. Been off cigarettes for moren'n 25yrs now & it's the best thing I ever did! ;) My wife is much happier, I feel better overall & I'm quite sure my medical bills are lower. I'm not a 'former smoker ZEALOT' who tries to shame or force other smokers into quitting. In my estimation that'd be a good thing but everyone to their own kick ;) . I often enjoy being around someone who's smoking a fragrant pipe toabcco or fine cigar but again that's their affair. Upon very rare occassions such as having a few drinks with old friends, or driving 'cross country' alone late at night, something, a sight sound, smell, etc, will trigger a sudden memory & for a second there, "I'd KILL for a cigarette" but before I could possibly act on the urge, it's already a fading memory; not missed until a possibly similar eposide somewhere later & just as unexpected & ineffective. Guess the best overall effect from quitting smoking is that I got back my sense of taste. After a few months of not smoking I suddenly discovered that for years, I'd been eating a whole bunch of 'crap' that I didn't even LIKE for pete's sake  8)

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR DECISION & INSTSTITUTIONAL FORTITUDE. YOU'LL NEVER REGRET IT!

 Keep up the good work! It takes a while to get past the nicky fits. You will be surprised how your sense of smell comes back also. When some of my customers that smoke come in where I work I am grossed out by how they smell like an ashtray. Always think to myself did I smell like that? Gross.

When my grandfather described his emphysema to me, he said it was like having a person sit on your chest 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He had to stop and rest every five minutes just to go grocery shopping.

Good for you!

Stick with it, and I know you will be happy you did. You are lucky you have someone to quit with. Be firm with each other, and support each other. You can do it.
