tearhead

I took the name "tearhead" because for the last two weeks both my husband and I have become totally obsessed with teardrops. It started when we visited a nifty little auto museum in Hartford, Wisconsin, which had a vintage really little teardrop and as we walked by we thought, "Hm, that's just the kind of thing we'd do." And then later on, my husband saw a tear being towed and brought the subject up seriously.

Since then we've been searching online and trying to figure out whether to buy or build. Tears seem scarce as hen's teeth in southeast Wisconsin, but we've been checking Craigslist in Chicago, Milwaukee, and Janesville. Yesterday we lost an ebay auction on a really sweet trailer. Somebody else got the deal!

We could build one. My husband is very handy (farm boy). But we want to get camping! Did tent camping for years with our three kids, then discovered that hotels are pretty darn comfortable (discovered that on "the circle tour" around Lake Superior, which would be great in a tear) and have mostly been doing European travel. But we got a new little tent a couple of years ago and started camping again.

We're just not wild about sleeping on the ground, and don't want some huge rig. Looking to buy or build a 5 foot wide with 12 volt fittings and don't need a TV, microwave, etc. The hunt is fun though! And this website is absolutely amazing! I just found the alphabetical listing yesterday and realized that reading that will probably keep me busy until fall! You guys have a good thing going, and I'm happy to have found you!

SAME HERE! What a coincidenceseses. :-)~

It must be spring fever, 'cause after casually pondering a teardrop on and off for a couple of years, I caught the same bug you and your husband have, and at about the same time! Look at my join date... Hahaha... (I had joined here just over two years ago, and under what username I have no idea. I might've posted once or twice, too.)

Point is, I've got the FEVER, and it shows NO sign of abating. In fact, although I had planned to build mine and wanted to begin immeditately, I can't start mine just yet (oh! the agony!) for a couple of reasons. Work is slow -AND- I'm gettin' married!

Tanya wants to travel in the tear, too; she thinks it's great as well as a great idea for travel from SoCal to Portland to visit family twice a year. She knows we can cut our hotel bills in half... but what she doesn't know is that we'll be doing a LOT of camping, too. Hee.

So, although I can't start the build process right away and am bummed about that, the trailer design and build plans improve. They improve with every minute I spend here, reading. There is much to learn... and if I'd started building when I wanted to, the project would have to have been done over due to what I know now just after 2.5 weeks.

2.5 weeks of reading about trailer chassis, trailer axle options, electrical systems, both 12V and 120V (you want both in your tear), deep cycle batteries... woodworking tools, woodworking techniques (glue! and clamps! LOTS of clamps! rofl...) screws, hinges, trim, weatherstripping, hatch door designs... trailer lighting... skinning aluminum... the list is freaking endless but I'm now about halfway prepped to build a nice, lightweight, solid, good-looking little teardrop.

I see now at the bottom of your post that you've discovered sdtripper's Most Excellent Alphabetized Information Index:

http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=12276 Thanks again, sd!

I had to laugh when I saw the thread title (remember the '70's? Eh, you're not old enough but I do, barely... *cough* *cough*), seeing the word "crack" (substitute any word you like) and then seeing your lovely avatar pic. I would've never guessed!

Welcome!

I bought Steve Fredrick's plans and used some of his ideas and some of my own. It was a nice guide though. Cindi asked me yesterday how much it has cost so far. I really had no idea. I have a stack of receipts a foot high but I'm afraid to add them up. We blew past the $750 mark with just the trailer.

With all the reciepts we got I asked Marijo to add em up for me so Id have an idea. I was always getting nickle and dimed to death. After adding and re-adding she looked up at me sheepishly and said $2500? Like it was a question. She has bought so much camping equiptment, Im just going to hope that is everything included.

Hey Tearhead & hubby,

Welcome to the forum... Hope you have a lot of fun here! The addiction is not as bad as some others might be...

And like Dean A. said, the Camp Inn trailers are definitely a nice trailer.

Whatever you decide, be sure to take lots of photos.

Mike...

That is so true! I really got serious last summer thinking that I might build, and I look at those plans now and just laugh!!

I learn something new/get a new idea every day. I believe that's why there are so many 2nd teardrop builds, and 3rds...''

Anyway, welcome Tearhead!

I am addicted too. My solution was to buy a trailer. Go Little Guy. They are in N. Canton, OH.

12-Steps of Teardropper Anonymous

Postby Alfred » Wed Apr 29, 2009 10:30 pm

12 Steps of Teardroppers Anonymous

1) Admitted I was powerless over my teardrop build and my life was unmanageable.

2) Came to believe a power greater than myself (the teardrop and tiny trailer website) could return me to sanity.

3) Turned my will and my life over to building my teardrop, as I understood it.

4) Took a fearless and moral inventory of all my mistakes, mis-cut wood, un-squared corners, while building my teardrop.

5) Confided to at least one other teardrop builder the nature of these wrongs.

6) Became entirely ready to let the teardrop group members help me correct these mistakes on my teardrop build.

7) Humbly posted request for step-by-step instructions, with pictures, to the group.

8.) Made a list of all the RV building materials I still needed to buy (More wood, miter saw, power converter, fantastic vent fan, harbor freight trailer…)

9) Made a sincere effort to order all these parts, except when to do so overdrew my bank account.

10) Continued to take personal inventory of my teardrop build, and when I made a simple carpentry error, promptly admitted it.

11) Sought through prayer and meditation to keep my cool, when I had to redo my floor frame for the third time, because I still did not have it right.

12) Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of my teardrop build, sought to help other poor teardrop addicts like myself.

Submitted, with all due respect, to all of my fellow friends of Bill W. out there in teardrop land.

Hi Tearhead!

Welcome to the addiction! You're not alone. Until this (T&TTT) happened to me, I never believed I was capable of such an addiction. I was in full-blown obsession for at least a year. Thankfully it's subsided a bit (ie, I can sleep at night again), but it still manages to linger. Enjoy it while it lasts 8)

I'm originally from northeast Wisconsin, and we'll be journeying back there this summer with teardrop in tow. We'll also be swinging past your neck of the woods along the way. Maybe we'll cross paths.

Have fun!

The great thing is that when you finish your build, you have the ultimate camper! May you never tire from people asking you questions about your teardrop...

Super to have all these new friends!

(Having an eye-opener again today--this is a powerful addiction!)

Lisasweetie, it WAS a shadow from Ohio that I lost in the ebay auction, darn it! But the actual purchaser read my post sent me a private message and gave me some suggestions from her searching that we are following up on, so I may still be able to be in a tear this summer.

JMTK, we could maybe make that happen--I'm in about 30 miles south of 94.

Al, I didn't really need to check your profile to be able to suss you out as a fellow therapist (I'm a psychologist. I guess I should put that in there--was reluctant to share too much info right away.)! Your 12 steps are hilarious. Sorry about your floor! :applause:

It is certainly good to read though all posts. For those just become hooked on the teardrop experience beware, it doesn't stop once you finish the project. Could possibly be the reason that so many owners and builders are on this forum. We love to talk about them to anyone that will listen, and each time you stop on your travels there will be someone that will ask what is it, where did you get it and can I have a look inside. I was asked once what the little wife thought when I decided to become a teardrop owner/builder, I replied that I told her that it would bring us closer together. How so? The bed in the house is a king size!!!!!!!!!!

Hint re: "the wife"

Postby tearhead » Sun May 03, 2009 4:43 pm

I gather that this is something that really grabs hold and is not a passing fancy for the members on this forum.

The hint pertains to the term you use to address your wife: it might bring her closer if you reconsider referring to her as an object (the wife, like, "the car" or "the bills") Just a friendly suggestion--her name? "my wife"? Ooh--how about, "my dear wife"?! :lady: :lady: :lady:
