Just to share this photo of a nice side tent, made by Marti Dominiac (sp). Sorry I don't know the exact spelling of the name. It is a free standing side tent, and thought it was well made.

Photo taken last weekend at a trailer rally, Lake Casitas.

as part of my cargo trailer conversion, I would like to make a side tent also. Does anyone have a pattern for these?

I think you can use a pattern for a curtain or window awning -- you can find a variety of them in pattern books under home decor --

COSTCO.com Has their SUV Tent on sale for $129.95 plus shipping making it $140.?? That's and eight by eight. About half what others are charging.
