I actually have a 7' high fence around the back yard to keep the deer out of the vegestable garden. They still gather along the back fence to watch whatever I am doing back there, and they do seem extrememly interested when I have breakfast on the patio.

These were taken from my back yard here in the Texas Hill Country;

They're definitely cute, but can be quite a nuisance. I've had two near misses on my motorcycle, and that is no fun. Once in South Austin, and once near Wimberley. When we drive out to Big Bend, I pretty much refuse to drive at night, cause those deer are EVERYWHERE (except during hunting season) along 29, 290, and I-10.

I used to have deer in the yard at the lake house, on Lake Livingston. We had strict rules not to feed them -- the property was inside the Davy Crockett National Forrest.

I could stand in the yard as they walked by, but any motion toward them sent them running.

At night, we usually had a dozen or more sleep on the lawn -- they seemed to like the soft St. Augustine turf.

They like the St Augustine grass all right! So far they are keeping all the front yards on the street trimmed close, but I think they are getting a bit less hungry as the grass seems to be finally getting ahead of them. There are over 40 of them in that heard that lives back behind the house. They can do a lot of damage to any vegitation they decide looks like food. There are usually one or two lame ones back there that probably had a run in with somebody's vehicle. Luckily most people around here know to watch for them.

We kept the lawn cut, so they didn't eat it. I also ripped out the shrubbery that they like, and put in stuff they don't like.

The big mistake people make with deer is that they see them near the road, but don't slow way down. Deer will suddenly bolt in front of you, for no good reason. You have to think FOR them, and slow down -- and expect the unexpected.
