Dumb Godfather II question

I've watched this movie a few times. My question is about when Fredo, Michael, and the Senator are at the "naughty-show". Michael suspects there's a "rat" in the family and its confirmed when Fredo tells the good Senator that ,"Johnny Ola knows these places like the back of his hand."
Thus confirming to Michael that Fredo is the rat...Is Fredo that much of an idiot? This'll really help me out a lot, because Michael seems like a smart guy, and he should have seen this coming. Just want to know what everyone else thinks if they were in a similar predicament.

In the movie, Fredo is some what "not all there". Fredo told Michael that he never knew Johnny O, so when he heard this, he knew Fredo wasn't being honest, and he knew Johnny wasn't to be trusted.
What would I do, wow, that's tricky, but yet I'm not in the mob! ( That's my story and I'm stickin' with it)

Fredo was a bit slow and in his excitement while talking about this sex show he completely forgot his lie about not knowing Johnny Ola. I think if you recall every interaction leading up to that scene with Michael and Fredo, you could see Michael reading Fredo like a bad poker player - as Michael seemed to be able to do with all of his enemies.
