Greetings from Connecticut!!

Postby TheresaD » Thu May 07, 2009 2:18 pm

Hello all! I just had to join this forum. For years I've wondered what those little tear shaped campers were like inside. I've recently begun investigating these little wonders as an alternative to tent camping. All I can say is.....I'M HOOKED!!! My eyes hurt from spending so much time on my computer this past week! I've been trying to devour as much info on teardrops as possible. I've learned tons. Initially I was thinking that I'd like to "get one of those little tear things"... Now I'm seriously considering building one for myself! I'm going to continue to do alot more reading on the matter first though. So many of you have built some amazing tears! I'm a little bit intimidated by the prospect since I don't have much experience with woodworking etc. and only have a basic knowledge of power tools. However...I'm very artistically inclined and pick up mechanical things pretty quickly so I don't think it will take me long to get myself up to speed on things. Plus... I have guy friends that are skilled at welding, electrical, and building things.. I'm sure once they realize that I'm considering this project it won't take long before their curiosity takes over and they will want to come check things out and offer a hand. That will be a major bonus. For the time being though.. the idea is in the formulative stages. I still have so many things to consider in what I want/need in my teardrop. I'll be curious to hear if there are many women out there that have built their own. I saw the Desert Dawg trailer but that's the only one I know about that was done by a woman. I'm looking forward to reading and learning more about teardrops. I'm also hoping that there will be a gathering somewhere reasonably close to me that I can go to to see some teardrops up close and personal. I look forward to reading posts from all of you and welcome any and all advice.
All the best!
Theresa

Hi there! I'm so glad there's someone w/ a teardrop close by. I live on the E.Htfd/G-bury town line. I'd love to come see your trailer some time. You can let me know when you'll be around and maybe I can swing by some evening after work or some weekend. Thanks for the offer!

Welcome, and best of luck to you, Theresa. Please let us know where you're from. You can find many of the gatherings by clicking on TearJerkers or Destinations at the top of the page of T&TTT. If you're near the Central California Coast we're having a gathering Sept. 10-13 in San Luis Obispo County. Plenty of women have built their own teardrops. You can probably reel in some help from your guy friends, too, if you want.

Theresa,
Yep sounds like youve been biten by the Teardrop bug. It is so addictive. But there are alot of worse things you could be spending your time on. Listen dont be intimidated by the build. You can make it any shape you want. Nothing is wrong. So do alot of research and take your time. Planning is as much fun as building.
Good luck and enjoy your Tear.

Hope to see you on the road.

Thanks for the info on the gathering. I'm definitely going to check out the tearjerkers site and I'm going try to make it up to the gathering in my humble tent! I'm so glad to know that I haven't gone completely mad about this recent obsession of mine. I've only voiced my thoughts to a few of my friends (who already know I'm slightly nuts) and they've given me that funny raised eyebrow look that folks give when they think someone is on the verge of being committed. I'm hoping that after I deliberate on this for a while and come up with a clear gameplan I'll be able to show them who's nuts! (It'll probably still be me.) Here's some food for thought... I'm hoping to keep my build costs down to some extent ...which by the sounds of things most people have... I'm hoping that my build will have somewhat of a "green" twist to it. I'm planning on checking at the local dump to see what sort of goodies come in on a regular basis. I know someone who worked there and said that they used get all sorts of left over building materials such as plywood, insuation sheets etc. that are in perfect condition.. just left over.. My thinking is why fill up the land fill with perfectly good and usable materials when I can put them to good use building my tear. The way I look at it, the more I can harvest from there the better the impact on the environment and on my wallet as well. I first need to establish my design and plan and then figure out what my "wish list" will be. In the mean time... I look forward to learning from all of you on this site.
All the best,
Theresa

Hi Theresa,

Welcome to the forum.

Lots of women have built and are building teardrops. In fact the lady teardroppers have their very own thread...

Mike...
The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten, so build your teardrop with the best materials...

Theresa, all you have to do is think you can do it, and guess what, you can. Good luck on your build, ask questions, take pics and post em.

Theresa...we got started in a similar fashion...One day last summer I was at a car show and saw this little trailer and thought, wow, totally cool! My brother told me it was a teardrop trailer, like I was supposed to know already, so I went home and Googled it and ended up here. Told my husband we were buying or building one Very Happy ; so we went looking. Became more and more convinced we could build one...so here we are...nearing the end of a GenBen build...both of us obsessing daily...starting to talk about one for our son!

Hey and welcome

Postby John T. Hodgen » Fri May 08, 2009 5:12 pm

Welcome Theresa,
We(John T & Linda) have just gotten ours campable. :applause: It took about 4 months, 23-30 trips to Lowe's, and it took about $1650.00 so far.
We named her "Costa Lotta--the reason so much of the month is left at the end of the money!" For build picture/camp pictures go here; http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/panheadjohn60/ and it's also on Stacey David's Gearz TV website here: http://www.gearztv.com/index.php?conten ... c=12_14178  Hope this gives you inspiration to get sawdust flying.
Til later by the fire--John T.
