Greeting from Columbia, Missouri!!

Postby jonesgirl » Thu May 07, 2009 7:18 pm

I’m in the process of building a teardrop. I’m lucky enough to have a job with summers off and usually I’m bored to tears. This summer I’ll trade my watery teardrops for a wooden one! :)

I live in an apartment so I’m building this in my offsite storage unit…with no electricity! Yep! A teardrop built by a woman with very little building experience, using only cordless tools…. People think I’m nuts, but I think I’m a determined, resourceful woman who understands the basics of building mechanics. I’ve spent an embarrassing amount of time researching this process and enjoying the creative ideas already out there! Despite all I’ve learned from research, trial and error has been my biggest teacher so far! Sound familiar anyone?? Now it’s time to draw on the wisdom and experience of those of you who have done this before me. (Teach me your ways oh wise one!!)

I’ve got pictures of my building process so far, but I need to reformat my pics, so I'll so I’ll add them soon. for now, I’ll just add a pic of my camper as of a few days ago and fill you in on my progress so far. I’m building on a 1982 Coleman pop-up frame. (I was going to modify the camper until I learned the floor was rotted-so I stripped it to the frame.) I’ve removed rust and painted the frame. I’ve also replaced the lights and electrical wiring for the tail and brake lights (and they work!!) I've built a sturdy floor, and attached it to the frame. I started to frame the walls but felt intimidated by the size of my project vs the size of my little Saturn 4-door. It looked HUGE to me and I’ve never driven more than a few straight miles with a trailer. I would feel more comfortable with something a bit more manageable, so I removed the framing and will scale down my plans to something smaller and a bit more simple (faster) to build. Decisions….decisions…. so many options and so little time. It’s now May and my summer begins in two weeks! I don’t want to spend it building, I wan to hit the road!

Anyway, I’m having fun, learning lots and it’s a great way to build confidence….I’m looking forward to reading lessons learned from those of you who have built and traveled before me. I hope to meet some of you on-line and on the road this summer!!

Hi Jones,

Welcome to the forum.

Yep, you can do it! Many girls have done it before you... :)

And just have plenty of batteries to run your power tools, I'm sure you can pull that part off too.

As for size, if you are towing with a saturn, I'd build as small as possible, and as light as possible.

An option is to push the popup camper frame to the side, and get a Harbor Freight 4x8, and build a light 4x8 or 4x9 on it. There are many design profiles that would look good on the 4x8 trailer. Here's one of my favorites...

I didn't quite finish the design, but you get the idea. Center the body on the chassis, perhaps cover it with aluminum, etc...

Jonesgirl, welcome to the forum. Wow, no power tools and building in a storage unit..........good for you. Be sure to ask any question you need answers to, we are here to help. Being a Missouri gal, you gotta be pretty and handy as well. That is where I met my life's partner many years ago. Do try to get some pics posted, we just love pics. As for size, I am hauling my 4 x 8 woody teardrop all around the US with a 4 banger Toyota Camry an have no problems at all. I suggest you not build it any bigger than mine and it'll tow like a dream. Good luck on your build.

Hi CrazyGirl!! Folks thought I was crazy too. (I think they still might but that's another story 8) ). There's a lot of lady builders here but I'm not sure many of us built without power!

Thanks for the invite! That's about 2 1/2 hours from me so I think I'll drive down and meet some of the local members on Saturday. :shake hands: I guess you already know we had a lot of rain lately and some pretty intense storms last night so it's going to be pretty soggy down there and probably a more than a few tree limbs to deal with too. Thanks to your teardrops, you won't have to sleep on soggy ground!!
Hope to see you there!

Image to the playground Teresa. I hope you made it to the campground? Nasty storms Friday but I hear the weather got better.

I will echo Mike's advice about the smaller TD. I built on a pop up and it is big. Just how big is your frame?

I know you've heard the pictures thang but ya gotta keep the bubble oil level

Thanks everyone for all your helpful suggestions! Wow! So many good ideas here!! I drove down to meet the folks at the gathering near Bennett Springs last weekend. I had to laugh so many times because everyone there was as obsessive as I’ve been in planning this “little” project. I felt right at home…they were speaking my language!

Seeing the different teardrops was a big help! I realized I was over building. I kinda figured that anyway. So I got to work tearing down partially framed walls, but left some vertical posts to help plan the size of my final design (whatever design that may be) …. Anyway, I’m going to print out the picture on normal paper and use it to sketch the different styles I like. This will give me a better sense of aerodynamics and to answer the other critical question: Does it look CUTE sitting behind my car??
So… as to the size of my pop-up frame: it’s 6 ½ x 6. I would like to take the recommendations offered to me for a 4 x 8 size, but my bank account recommends I stick with the frame I have and make it work for now....I can always build another td after this summer when I have a better idea of what I want and need in a camper. –I’ve added a few pics of the working snap shot I mentioned above and also the wheel (and I’ll be replacing the tire and also getting the bearings cleaned and lubed), and a pic of the frame before I added the floor. --- Now...I just need to sit down with all the pictures of teardrops and TTT’s I’ve collected and figure out how to combine all the features I like about them. This should be interesting! :designing:
