Inexpensive 30 amp power inlet???

Postby madprinter » Mon May 11, 2009 10:23 pm

Im looking for an inexpensive 30 amp power inlet. I can find 15 - 20 amp units for under $20. But the 30 amp units really seem to jump up in price. Anyone have a sorce or idea?? thanks, William

You might try an RV salvage yard. Is there a particular reason you need a 30amp unit? Seems most electrical devices one would want in a trailer would run with a 15 or 20 amp circuit.

I have a 6300btu a/c, a microwave, frig and a small tv. I know I wont be running them all at once, but don't want to limit myself later. I purchased a small breaker box and two 15 and two 20 amp breakers.

Actually the 30 amp outlets at campgrounds are 3 wire 120 volt outlets, so that is the configuration you would want on your trailer also. My 5th wheel trailer came with a retractable power cord which worked okay except that when in use the little access hatch door left a gap around the cord allowing ants and other stuff to enter the trailer through the port. I installed a 3 prong 30 amp 120 volt twistlock inlet from Camping World which at the time was around $90. It proved to be worth the money and effort as it eliminated that main entrance for ants and other insects.

This is the inlet I used. Marine and RV power inlets use the same configuration for 30A 125V. It is nice but not inexpensive.

Below is a photo of the power cord that attaches to the inlet. The yellow female connector plugs into the male power inlet that has three blades. The black ring on the yellow connector screws onto the power inlet to form a watertight connection. Also shown are two optional adapters. On the left is 50A male to 30A female that I have not needed so far. The small adapter inside the coil is 15A male to 30A female that has been useful at home, but so far the campgrounds where I stayed all had 30A outlets.

Thanks for all the help. I ended up going with a setup like wlooper89 has, except I used a Marinco inlet. I found the inlet on ebay for $52.00 including shipping. I also found a matching shore cord for $29.99 including shipping on ebay. Getting close to finishing my wireing. Next is buying a small fride and micrwave, and a porta potti. Then I'll be set to camp. Havent yet tottalled up all the money I've spent on this camper, :? But I built it good enough it'll be around when I'm gone , so I'm sure I'll get many years of use out of it before passing it on. William
