New to the site

Postby carlson » Tue May 12, 2009 10:13 am

hello guys....i am new to the site - been lurching around for awhile but now i finally have decided to start a teardrop as a summer project.....I am still in the research phase and trying to figure out exactly what i am looking for.

Initially i wanted to have "everything" (sink, fridge, tv, etc) but now i am learning that less is more.....especially trying to pack it all into a teardrop.

Thanks in advance fro any help.....

Carlson, welcome to the best teardrop forum on the web. You have come to the right place and all you have to do is ask, if you need build info. I suggest you get to a local gathering and walk in and introduce youself and state you intended plans. They are all a great bunch and you will find teardroppers are very helpful. Remember, every 10th newbie has to build a woody, and there have just been 9 before you......so.......Naw, only kidding.

As a relocated ex-Rockford-onian, we were almost neighbors some time ago. Good luck on your build, remember, ask, take pics, post em and enjoy.
Roly

Remember isn't about giving up what you want... "less is more". It is an artful negotiation and a well planned design that is subject to change as you "refine" the plan. I agree with Roly's assessment we need another Woody (but he and I, and plenty of others too are a little biased).

Enjoy the planning and keep us up to date on your progress. Pics are worth more than a thousand words.

As I am married to a Rockford Gal, you are in good comapny here.

hey guys.....i actually love the look of the woodies and that has defienetly not been ruled out yet! Seems that a lot of the designs call for a "cheaper" wood to be used as support and a "skin" placed over.......For the woodies (especially the roof) what kind of material are you using as a skin?

Carlson,

On mine, I am using cedar as the roof, it is a one layer 3/4 inch thick with no internal supports. The sides are a 3/4 inch yellow pine frame with 1/4 inch oak ply outside and 1/4 inch oak ply inside.

Regardless your choice it will be an amazing project.

Lot's of woody roof options...mine is cedar strip with 4 oz glass. I think that if you can imagine it, though, you can build it!!! One thing is for sure, everyone is always ready to offer friendly advice!!! Welcome to the forum!!!

Hey Carlson,

Gotcha!
We caught another one.
Welcome to the madness.

You're making me homesick. I grew up on the south side and then the family moved to Oak Park. I have many fond memories and friends in Chicago.

Steve

Thanks for all the warm welcomes!

Steve - I am southside as well.....grew up in south holland and have lived in beverly for the past 10 years.....Love this town! I just wish we had a spring this year.....seemed to go right from winter into summer

So i have been throwing some ideas and plans around.....gonna have to get them into the CAD so i can start showing you guys....

So the tow vehicle is a jeep cherokee and and the trailer is gonna to be used mainly for music festivals as well as camping....

So right now i am on the hunt for a trailer that i can build up from....one of my main concerns is ride height because i have a lifted jeep....i was thinking i might have to make a custom frame like i saw in one of the other posts....ii think he was from Australia with a snorkel on his jeep

THE HUNT BEGINS!
