The Dutch job

Postby H@nk » Sun May 17, 2009 3:23 pm

Hi every body,

Now my N@BT@B is almost ready for the road and its first way out, its time to hold me on with other things.
As a real Dutchie, I'm very intersted in the word or words with Dutch in it.
Please, post them on this tread with explanations.
The one I know is Dutch oven cooking. Cooking in a big iron pot with lid where you lay on the burning materials.

Grtz Henk

As per Wikipedia...

Dutch uncle is a term for a person who issues frank, harsh, and severe comments and criticism to educate, encourage, or admonish someone. Thus, a "Dutch uncle" is a person who is rather the reverse of what is normally thought of as avuncular or uncle-like (which would be indulgent and permissive).

;) Dutch door---door with a top and bottom half. One can be left closed and one open. Keeps the baby's in and animals out.

See Steve Cox's Vardo door. Note wife in and door closed to keep the animals out.

Double Dutch---in jump rope, where two ropes are used by jumpers at the same time.

What about a "Dutchman" ? When working with wood and there is a problem you remove a section of the wood then cut a plug to fit tightly into the area you removed. sometimes it may be as thin as a veneer. Hopefully it won't even be noticed. Walt

What about- THE FLYING DUTCHMAN

The Flying Dutchman, according to folklore, is a ghost ship that can never go home, doomed to sail the oceans forever. The Flying Dutchman is usually spotted from afar, sometimes glowing with ghostly light. It is said that if hailed by another ship, its crew will try to send messages to land or to people long dead. In ocean lore, the sight of this phantom ship is a portent of doom.

How about "Double Dutch", the rope skipping pattern? I must rely on someone else, though, for how it goes. I guess it's the one with two people swinging a long rope and two in between, jumping it.

Dutch wife (plural Dutch wives)

Etymology The origin of the term is thought to be from the Dutch colony of Indonesia where Dutch traders would spend long periods away from their wives. Also, they would stuff a sack to keep them in their bunk in rough seas

1. A long body-length pillow that can be held or wrapped around one's body while sleeping.
2. In East Asia and Southeast Asia, a wicker or bamboo tube the size of a person for use in the bed. In the summer heat, the open bamboo structure is cooler than fabric pillows or sheets. The Dutch wife is embraced by the user- this position exposes the maximum amount of the body to cooling breezes.
3. A prostitute.
4. A sex doll.
