I never covered a tear, but I had a garage queen that I covered, a 1986 Porsche 951 (944 turbo). One thing about ‘real’ car covers is that they can actually breathe even though they are waterproof. They are often multi-layered with special fabrics and coatings. I think my cover ran about $250 bucks, but the car could be covered without causing any problems, mold, paint damage etc. I don’t imagine a tear is any different (that’s why I suspect that some have had trouble with using regular poly tarps). I think the reason the ‘SUV’ cover was so expensive – was it was probably an actual vehicle cover and not just a plain tarp.
FWIW. What you might be able to do it build kind of a poly-covered PVC shelter that is just slightly bigger than your tear (so that the tarp is not in contact with the tear and air can circulate and keep from getting damp and whatnot).
