Using car sunroof as a roof vent?

I'm kicking around that idea. Has anyone done this? My thing would how to get a screen on it . Any tips would be appreciated.....

There are one or two on here that have done it. How about using one from a scrapped truck as they often have screens built in , and the cab roofs are flatter than a car, so less problems with two way curves. Ive got one stashed away at work , ready for my next build

I've planned to use one I saved from a parts car. It has a slight curve on the long dimension and is virtually flat on the short dimension, so I may well install it in the roof longways where the curve is just about identical. That's right over the bed, which is longways, too. It's big enough for an esacpe hatch and this one is tinted but of course not screened. Hmm, let's see...the handle is at the very edge...

Just make sure you account for any drain holes - I'd hate for you to find out about those in a rainstorm

For a screen, you could attach an automatically retracting screen. Connect it to the inside or outside. As the sunroof opens, it will 'pull' the retractable screen open. Look up Phantom Screens. Or, you could use a standard household window screen and set it in flush with the little tabs to hold it in place.

There is someone I know who has done it, a glass popup auto sunroof in a tear.

Me, too, but no drain holes; a serious gasket under the glass, but thanks for the look-out.

The hinges are well above the inside frame and the lift / latch handle is off to the side, so the inside frame should clamp in and trim out most any old scrap of sreening with only the lift rod moving through it, BUT we'll see when I get that far, with luck, before I cut the hole.

Depending on how big you want it, you could use a marine deckplate. They are built to be water tight. I used them for a galley window and a sky light on Todah 1. I used a wooden embroidery ring with mosquitoe mesh attached over it for a screen.

The one in this picuture is 10" OD.

You will get some condensation from off your body unless you have it or a window cracked.
