Fishing Pole Carrier Made Out of PVC Pipe

Postby PresTx82 » Wed May 20, 2009 7:08 pm

I've ran across a couple of conversations before on this forum and I can't seem to bring anything up using the "search" regarding making a fishing pole carrier out of PVC.

I wanted to know if anyone has develop a good design to hold a pole AND the reel using PVC pipe. The only good designs on the web are for taking the reel off and enclosing the pole in the tube. That would be easy, but I'm looking for another design which leaves the reel on. I have one design in my head, but wanted to know if there are any others floating out there before I make this one.

I'm going on vacation in two weeks and THIS TIME I'd like to not break my fishing pole by slamming it in the hatch! A mulitple pole carrier would be ideal.

Thanks. That's the exact thread I was thinking about. I'll probably just start experimenting and let you all know what I come up with.

And pixtures, pixtures, pixtures . . .
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

I'm going to try to design a fishing pole holder into my camper.
My plan is to use pvc or a 45 degree piece of trim at the wall/floor intersection and have access to it from the galley at each lower corner. Could hold fishing poles or other long poles.

Just a thought.

I made the standard PVC carrier utilizing 2" PVC pipe with one end capped and the other with a threaded cap. The length of my pipe is 80 inches as most standard poles are approxiamtely 78 inches. A very basic design which will only hold two poles.

Image

The eyelets of the rod just barely fit in the 2 inch pipe.

Two poles will fit but they must be inverted with the reels taken off. I didn't want to enclose the reel as I'm not worrying about damaging the reel. The concept is to protect the pole from being slammed in the door, window or hatch.

Image

In the picture above and below, you see both project tube carriers. One with the threaded cap and the other with a channel cut down the length of the pipe just enough to fit the entire rod into the pipe.

In the above picture you can get an idea of what it would look like capping the channel pipe design with the solid end cap. I didn't have another one to cap it off for the picture. I'm thinking that there will be a problem getting the solid cap off and on when you want to remove or place your fishing pole in the tube. I'm thinking maybe sand down the pipe end so the solid end won't be as tight. Any suggestions on that? I'll pick up the rest of my material tomorrow and show you all the completed design.

I like the idea a lot, but have you put any thought into the effects of rain/sun on your reel's? I say this only because I fear any length of time in rain or sun such as on a long trip, may cause premature aging and wear and tear on a reel. Do you have any thing in mind for covering them during an extended trip?

Good point. Long trips could cause some water and sun damage, and of course the bugs will be comitting suicide on the reel while going down the highway as well.

With this basic design you could wrap a plastic shopping bag around the reel and tuck the excess into the pipe. The design allows for it. I know it sounds trashy, but its a fishing reel. It'll be up on your luggage rack with your other camping equipment. You could also make a canvass bag with a draw string on one end and pull the bag over the reel end and tie the draw string closed protecting the reel. I'm sure with all the great talent on this forum a great answer will emerge. :D

Don't forget a very tiny chain or cable to attach the cap to the tube so you don't lose the cap. A little SS screw should do the trick to keep the two together. It's amazing how little caps find their way into the lake or off a cliff.

In previous discussions, there was talk of flaring the 2" PVC to 4" or even 6" to shield and engulf the reel. To cover the reel, how about a piece of wetsuit material (neoprene) that would slip over the 2"PVC and could be stretched over the real and would snug up real tight and keep everything from bouncing. If somebody in your house sews, you could do a little custom work with some neoprene and get a nice water and dustproof solution.

 Now that is what we are talking about. With the slot cut you can protect the whole thing. Also, if you cut both ends and make both with threaded caps you can do two reels at one time. As for the reels they make covers for them.

I'm afraid mine see too much sun as it is and a bit of protection won't help that. It will keep the line for coming off in the wind.

I was thinking just that regarding cutting the threaded end piece so the reel could slide through and capping the end by screwing the end cap piece in. The solid end piece gets too stuck. Also, excellent idea on threading the other end and cutting the channel slot at the other end, thus carrying two poles & reels.

I like the neoprene idea above as well. I'll brainstorm some more and see what I (we) come up with.

The pole carier is complete. :D I do not have covers for the reels yet. As you can see the channels in the top are large and will let water in. I'm going to drill some drain holes in the bottom of the pipe to let out any water. One suggestion for the project is to glue the threaded end cap on first to insure is on tight, then cut the channel.

I'm leaving out tomorrow morning at O - Dark Thirty to get me some trout. Wish me luck! :worship:

The more I look at it, the more I like it. I'm thinking that my micro poles are much shorter than that. Mounted side to side, with one at the front and one at the rear would make a great pole holder/canoe carrier for the top of the car. :)
