Geocaching

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby dakotamouse » Sat May 09, 2009 8:30 am

Isn't Geocaching fun?! It is a great way to get some exercise and discover new areas in your community.

Even though walking might be tough on your knees now, I believe, they will slowly improve through the gently exercise. I like to take a walking stick with me, it helps with the uneven ground. A stick is also helpful for poking around bushes and rocks in case their is a critter in there you might not want to meet!

As far as trinkets go, I would aim for the kids. Most adults don't worry about it but the little ones get such a kick out of finding TREASURE! Go to the dollar store and buy a bag of rings or little cars.

With all the Geocaching going on here some one should do a tutorial or point us in the right direction.

Well I've downloaded some caches near where we'll be staying in Clarksville, IN. only 6 miles from the conference center in Louisville. I've downloaded sites around the Ohio river.

And on our return trip home, I've downloaded a few of the sites at Stone Mtn, in GA. I don't think I can do too much of the trails but I'm going to attempt to get to the top of the mountain. We shall see.

I read that there are a lot of quick grab caches along 75 but we can't stop at them all.

Lynn -

Yes you can stop! I have to - my wife Pat is really into GEOCACHING and I think her GPS is permanemtly glued to her side. She has lined up this weekends "Grabs" for Gettysburg - seems there are several -PUZZLE CACHES - on the battelfield. She has just started something new - at least to me - called WAYPOINTING. Really don't have all the specifics on it. Does anyone know about it?

So Lynn make the grab

Do you mean "Waymarking"? There is a website waymarking.com and it is used to mark/locate interesting things to see, etc.

I used waymarking a few years ago and found really cool outdoor sculpture garden just outside of Santa Fe that I would never have known about otherwise.

How do you like this device???? We are thinking about getting a few for our scout troop. Looks like it can be fun and a great teaching device.

Thanks

So far it's really great little unit, alittle hard for me to read the screen so I need my glasses but that's just because I'm old. the is a lot of talk on this unit at geo caching web site and so far everything possitive is said. Even the maker of this product is on the forum on geocaching.com.

I just started Geocaching. Love it. While hanging out in Quartzsite, AZ it is a blast just to start walking out in the desert to find your cache. My first one I found the other day was 390 meters from my campsite. Wow. Since then I found 3 more. I downloaded the app for my droid phone and it works fantastic.
