Image to the playground Caryn. You can do this. Just my opinion but you should stick with the 5 X if you can. You don't need a real heavy duty trailer.

BTW Carry On has a 5x8 no floor trailer. You just have to have the dealer call if they don't know. 12" wheels are better too.

Hey if you are looking for inexperienced builders just keep reading and be sure to visit the Lady Teardroppers.

Welcome

Postby Alfred » Sat May 23, 2009 7:54 pm

Hey Caryn,

Welcome to the teardrop forum. I've never built anything since shop class in HS, and I think I got a 'C' in shop! I'm now about 1/4th way through building a modified weekender. The folks here are very helpful and will give lots of feedback.

Welcome aboard!

t/d build

Postby John T. Hodgen » Tue May 26, 2009 6:18 am

Hey Caryn,
I like you had limited knowledge of building, read that concerned. I bought Steve Fredrick's dvd on building a t/d which gave me alot of HOW-TO. I started with a Tractor Suppl 4x8 trailer and $300.00 of wood. I had floor, walls, and the sides up in about a week. It took 4 months of actual build time to get where it is now. PLUS, I didn't have any plans-just looked at other's pics and incorporated what I knew I wanted.
Here is a couple of links to my build pics-- http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/panheadjohn60/ and http://www.gearztv.com/index.php?conten ... c=12_14178 I have about $1700.00 in it total cost. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

Thanks again everyone for your warm welcome, thoughts and suggestions. I've been looking at everyone's builds and have been taking notes, deciding on exactly what will be the best fit for me. The level of creativity you all have put into your rigs is great and continues to inspire me. I plan on getting started in July when I'm on vacation. By that time I hope to have a better handle manuvering around this site and will post some pics.

Summer is in full swing here on Cape Cod, now that Memorial Day has passed.....I send out a Thank You to our active duty military and to our veterans.

Thanks Again, Caryn :)

Where are you on the Cape?
We will be in E Sandwich for a week with our Rondack Lodge.
You're welcome to visit for a tour.

As for building your own, no problem!
Many women here have done a great job constructing their own T/D.
As was already mentioned, there is a great volume of experience here to draw from. Everyone here is happy to help.
If you would like more information on construction, I offer a ShopManual CD that covers the process. I have several ladies that have built very nice T/D's using the manual. No matter, I would be glad to help out as I can.
Have fun!
Blessings, Steve

Caryn, I just want to ease your mind about your limited woodworking skills. I too, took woodworking classes in high school, spent 4 years as an apprentice carpenter, worked in the construction field for 45 years, had a custom cabinet shop for 8 years, built many one-of-a-kind furniture projects in my 800 sq ft, fully outfitted woodworking shop, and I have to tell you, building a teardrop trailer is a snap!

Now, with all of that behind us. don't feel intimidated because you are not familiar with all of the ins and outs of working with wood. We are a wonderful wealth of informative builders, willing to share with you, any tips and methods that will help you with your build. The most important thing you have to do, is ask, ask, ask. Remember, there are lots of pics to look at, various sites to get tips on designing your build and I am sure you won't have any trouble at all. Hey, we even had a highschool girl build her own tear and took it to a far-away gathering, alone..........see, if she can do it, so can you. All of the fancy tools and extensive knowledge of power tools and joinery tricks are not required. All you have to do is decide that you too, can do it, and guess what........you can.
Good luck on your build, remember take pics.....we love em.

Caryn,
It was less than a year ago that I became hooked and then managed to convince my husband that we were capable of building our own Gen Ben. Here we are putting the finishing touches on it...almost ready for it's first trip out! We had little woodworking experience; we'd built bookshelves!...it's not perfect...it's not deluxe...but it's ours & we love it! And it was a visit to the Redwood Gathering last July that clinched it. A close up look really convinced us we were capable of building one. Go for it and enjoy!
