Yes...you gotta tie it down to the frame....I don't know what you are using for a frame...but I had 2x2 1/8 square tube and built a sub frame on top of that and then bolted the floor down to it...I used 3/8 carriage bolts bolted through the tubing, maybe 10 total, I'd have to count...you don't want your baby to go sliding off in a corner. The attached photo shows the trailer frame, and the sub frame with the flooring attached....the 2 by material on the sub frame gave me the thickness to attach the walls to....there is an extra 2x4 shown on the edge...It has the fender clamped to it temporarily...anyway...that's how I did it... The brush on asphalt roofing compound is what I used. I don't remember what I paid but that is a good thing, I seem to only remember the expensive items. A gallon was more than enough for one trailer.

floor

Use FRP to cover the bottom....Why use paint? Just flip the floor over and glue on the FRP....done....and you'll never have to do it again....

Fiberglas Reinforced Plastic
Chris :D

I used the Gardner stuff too--it's real cheap, and not hard to apply at all.

floor

Postby ellisdee9091 » Tue Sep 20, 2005 10:30 am

FRP is available at Home Depot. It is a Fiberglass Reinforced Panel in 4x8 sheets. You can use construction adhesive to glue it on. I use it on all my trailers. It is great for off road use and gravel roads. It will not chip or flake off, unlike paint or undercoat. No mess to install and no Godawful smell while painting. TRY IT....YOU'LL LIKE IT.

Steve,

Do you "sandwich" your floors in your construction? Build the basic floor, install insulation, then the FPS as the outer most/lower surface?

I plan to start floor construction this weekend.

Thanks!

Earl

Earl--that's why I don't understand the FRP stuff, if you're going to inuslate there, like I did.

I built my frame deck (2 by 2s), attached the ply sheet (floor), installed my rigid foam insulation, then brushed it over with the Gardners asphalt emulsion--all done on saw horses before bolting to the trailer frame.

And regardless of what anyone claims here, using the Gardners is a cinch. It will take you like 20 minutes to do the whole underside, and it DOESN'T smell that bad at all.

In the beginning, I just used the adherance of the Gardners, and a snug fit of the insulation, to hold it in place. Before I roll out for the first time, I'll be installing some deck screws (with washers), from the underside, into the insulation and just into the ply floor to permanently secure the insulation.

This was the one, cheap, EASY part of my entire build.
