Next time, what I will do is make the hatch first, then cut the sides to fit.

You know, what the heck is WRONG with this idea? Taking it down one level:

Why NOT cut out the gusset ply before your side walls are up? Using the side walls/skin as a template, and doing it comfortably on saw horses without having to scribe it later?

I HATE scribing, because it's hard to do after 14 beers.

I built the entire hatch in place, just like the front of the tear, and cut it free afterwards. No springback, no scribing, no worries.

Building a hatch is easy IF you take your time and think things out. When you ask a question
on a board, you'll get several different answers. Look for the answer that comes from
the one that did it once with success. Take your time and use common sense. And don't
use 1/4" ply. 1/8" will work just fine. You can see the way I built my hatch on page 12 of
my construction pages.

Just the way I did it and it worked for me.

People who asks a question and then think they have a better way ends up building twice.

This is the reason I try and stay out of this section. Besides, it's more fun to sit back and laugh at some of the answers instead of trying to help.
