No See-um bites

Does anyone know of a good way to stop no see-um bites from itching??? Just got back from the Tearup the ADK gathering and I'm covered! It looks like I have chicken pox on my legs arms and part of my face!! Those suckers aren't a bit afraid of deep woods cutter! I took some Claritin and that seems to have helped a bit. I'm trying to avoid calamine lotion...too messy... Just wondering if anyone out there has any tried and true methods to stop the itch...

How about hydrocortisone cream, it works for poison oak and has anti-itch on the front of the tube. That's what the doctor always recommended for my son when he got poison oak and it really helped and you know how itchy that is.

Benadryl also makes a cream for itching.

Hope the itch ends soon.

The inside of a banana peel will stop the itch of a mosquito bite. If you have a banana at home, you could try that. (If you wash the bites too soon afterward, you may have to rub the peel on your skin again.) Another thing that helps dull most types of itching is, believe it or not, aspirin.

Caution: Eating bananas will cause mosquitos to be drawn to you and bite you. How's that for a head scratcher! Eat it and call 'em to dinner. Rub the peels on and soothe the bites!

Oatmeal bath. Make your own by sticking oats in your blender until they're good and pulverized. Hope that helps. Itching sucks.

I feel your pain . . . Been there, done that, now I'm itching that. I just picked up some "Swan" Clear Anti-Itch Lotion at Walmart. It's that same thing as Benadryl Clear, but a whole lot cheaper ($3) Nancy just finished rubbing some on my nugget and it seems to be working. I FEEL YOUR PAIN!

Eric you crack me up! I figured that after that scrubbin' you gave it your nugget would be all set. Glad to hear that Nancy was able to get that taken care of for you once and for all. Who'd a thought that those nasty little no-see ums would go for the nugget anyway?!?

The banana peel thing is one I've never heard of before. Do you think they would look at me funny in the produce aisle if I started rubbing a banana all over my body??

I think more importantly...how to keep them from biting in the first place. In Alaska, years ago we had good luck with the regular Cutters, 6/12, Off etc....and when in the bush when they were really aggressive, some of the leftover military stuff, if you can get your hands on it. We used to have to almost take a bath in Off. Once bitten....Caladryl lotion, ugly pink stuff, worked to keep from itching. That and having Mom telling me to quit scratching! Doug

By the way, that idea is from a Farmers' Almanac blurb. I've tried both eating the fruit and rubbing the peel on. Both seem to be true. Who knows why....

I used to use Avon Skin so Soft to keep the black flies away in NH. Now they offer an insect repellant version.

We've been using a 98% Aloe Vera Gel...it seems to be helping... Shades of Chicken Pox

My Mom swears by Vitamin E oil. It works on yellow fly and mosquitos bites. Might work on no-seeums too boot. Woth a try if ya have some in the house.




Just punch a hole in one with a straight pin, rub the oil on the bite...er bites...

Theresa- Some people must react differently than others to their bite. I got bit dozens of times over the course of the weekend and the little red welts they left didn't itch and disappeared by the next morning. Lucky me!
